A strain of Rome Beauty from our orchard called a Law Rome. The red skin stains the flesh when the nights get cold.
A red apple with a slice of it. The white flesh has red veining in it.

Harvested and dried our Ashmead’s Kernel apples. A ripe Ashmead’s is an in-your-face apple: high acid, high sugar. An apple that solo drives a red convertible with the top down in the carpool lane during rush hour.
A close-up image of apples, mostly russet brown but with red cheeks over a green ground.

Just a quick phone pic, but I couldn’t resist. California skippers had all but disappeared from our garden a few years ago, but seem to be on the rebound. I’ll be zinnia soon, l’il buddy!

This Gravenstein apple tree across the road from my farm is about 90 years old and hasn’t been tended to in about 40 years, maybe more.
Apple tree bearing clusters of green apples surrounded by small oak trees and broom. Clearly not being taken care of.

Pink Pearl apples. Still on the tart side, but ready to pick. Their interior color is the best I’ve seen thanks to a cooler-than-typical summer so far.
A cluster of yellowish apples hanging on a tree, with a red cheek. They are pink inside but you have to take my word for it.

Sebastopol Gravenstein apples—I only manage to eat several a day when they’re in season.
An apple, along with a couple of other partially-seen apples, on a countertop. It is lopsided, yellowish-green, with random red stripes and stipples.

The Yellow Bellflower apple was supposedly George Washington’s favorite apple, and I have a tree that bears generous amounts of fruit. The apples are awful. Easily my least favorite variety. Maybe it’s a tree that doesn’t like the West Coast. I wish o could figure it out.

An old walnut tree, a remnant of a long-gone orchard, just starting to leaf out. Seen on my walk this evening.
Gnarled old walnut, showing graft line at the bottom of the trunk, surrounded by tall grass. The lower limbs show rings of holes where generations of woodpeckers and flickers have rummaged for insects. A few leaves showing at the tips of the branches. This tree barely has enough energy to leaf out.

Historic apple tree dating back to French settlers in the 1600s has been identified in Maine. My first thought: when can I taste it? www.bangordailynews.com/2025/05/04/h...

One of North America’s oldest apple trees found on Maine island
Called the Drap d’Or de Bretagna, the cultivar came from France, likely brought to Maine by Castine’s early French settlers in the late 1600s.

Only the biggest, best countries. This country came up to me, a real massive one, and he had tears in his eyes, and he said to me sir, thank you for these tariffs, it means a lot to my family — we’re gonna, we’re gonna, and it’s just an absolute disgrace and shouldn’t be happening.

Spotted my first Hooded Orioles of the season today in the garden. The Violet-Green Swallows and Barn Swallows showed up over the past few days too. Went to plant another garden bed this evening and saw a Grey Fox near the owl box. I listened to hummingbirds whir as I put my hands in the dirt.

First Gravenstein blossom cluster of the season, right on schedule. They are usually on full bloom on April 1 around here.

Yesterday I learned that the last original apple tree planted by Henderson Luelling at his Fruit Vale farm sometime between 1854 and 1859 survived until 2020. The remnant of the tree is still standing, and I happened to be driving past the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland today.
Photo of a leaning tree trunk in a front yard of a stucco bungalow. The tree is clearly dead. There is fungus growing on it.

The normalizing language in this Washington Post article from this morning is a joke. Whittling is something done with a penknife, not grenades.
