[FEATURE] [security] Adding DNSSEC and SSHFP records #2

Open

altf4arnold opened yesterday · edited by altf4arnold

What feature do you want?

I would like you to implement DNSSEC with SSHFP records.
What problem does this solve?

With HTTPS, you can be certain that the website isn't being spoofed. Apart of encrypting your connection, it also validates the authenticity of the cert against a root CA.

In this current state, the SSH server will answer with a key. But there is no real way to verify said key's authenticity against anything. So basically, anyone could spoof the server and take away money from potential customers.

It is like leaving a HTTPS website open with a self-signed certificate
How should it work?

Providing the user does know how to use it (sadly requires a manual activation in your ssh-client configuration and the use of a resolver that doesn't predate the year 2000), your ssh client will compare the key provided by the server with the one provided by DNS.

Example on my own git server :

The authenticity of host 'git.adechamps.net (2a01:4f9:c012:4921::1)' can't be established.
ED25519 key fingerprint is: SHA256:7cRwIz8b9WeyFKp/IIJarR14o3K5P/vLP8hwjiWudUk
Matching host key fingerprint found in DNS.

You can see that it first doesn't know if my server is authentic, it will then look it up in the DNS and see that it found a match. So this is probably authentic (and if it finds a key and it doesn't match, it will prevent you from connecting all at once)

Awesome terminal shops STICKR.SHOP(0)

NAME
stickr.shop - order officially nerdy stickers for your notebook.

SYNOPSIS
ssh stickr.shop

DESCRIPTION
stickr.shop is a highly secure, minimalist commerce platform designed exclusively for the terminal enthusiast. It bypasses the overhead of graphical user interfaces, excessive JavaScript, and tracking cookies to deliver a pure, efficient shopping experience accessible only via SSH.

The stickers are curated for a highly specialized audience, covering essential developer tools, operating systems, and editor philosophies, including Linux, Git, Arch, Gentoo, Rust, Go, Vim, and Emacs.

ENVIRONMENT
The dev-stickers interface respects standard terminal environments, including $TERM and $LINES/$COLUMNS.
We strongly recommend a monospace font and a color scheme that prevents eye strain (e.g., Solarized Dark).

DIAGNOSTICS
A successful connection will return a welcome banner showing our proud stickr.shop donkey.

An unsuccessful connection will likely yield:

ssh: connect to host stickr.shop port 22: Connection refused (Host is down or unreachable).

If the shop reports an internal error, try the clear command, or disconnect and reconnect. All errors are logged to /dev/null.

BUGS
A known "feature" is that once stickers are applied, they drastically increase the host computer's perceived compile time, due to the intense feeling of being watched by a Vim logo.

Bugs that are not features should be reported in an aesthetically pleasing text file and shared only via a secure, encrypted message to the system administrator.

Are you team go or are you team rust? Both stickers now available via SSH: $ ssh stickr.shop
Three stickers on a table photographed close-up.
The first sticker is of the mascot of the go programming language, a blue gopher.
The second sticker is of the logo of the rust programming language, a bold letter R inside a cogwheel.
The third sticker has the text sticker.shop with the "s" and the "sh" written in a different color.
