Dan, that NR article was by Norman Ornstein.

Zohran Mamdani or Pete Buttigieg for Speaker of the House. Dems biggest weakness is political communications savvy. These two have it in spades.

But even then, in the halcyon days of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll, Henley did something good, namely he called the police.

I suppose when Trump invokes emergency powers to scotch the election, NYT will say "Trump finds creative ways to workaround Democracy." Actually sounds normal doesn't it?

That's not an improvement. It is still Sultzbergized.

Trump and the Tech Bros are non-Marxist Communists. A fascist salad with lots of oligarchs.

That SHOULD be true but it is the opposite. Those that can't tell the difference are the ones hired at the NYT.

Trump admin will not "think twice" about doing it again. Their MO is to double down.

Jack Smith being questioned by MAGA senators was like Abe Lincoln being grilled by confederate secessionists.

So Heg calls the top brass together after saying he's cutting their ranks by 20%. Did he cut the number of chairs in the auditorium by 20% and start playing music?

Perhaps the Rs real goal was to curry favor with Trump to continue benefits during remaining term and in case he succeeds in becoming a permanent dictator beyond 2028. 2/2

sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
But this R strategy of perceptual vilification only appeals to the hard core MAGA base. So not an effective strategy if your goal is to stop the hemorrhaging in the mid-terms. Was there another hidden goal? 1/2

It is not just Yosemite now. It is also The Grand Tetons. Trump wouild like to sell off all the national parks, I am sure. PS: Rep. Lieu be very careful who you support for Speaker.

I haven't thought it through much. But instead of two New Yorkers how about two Marylanders: Jaime Raskin and Sen. Van Hollen. They are not compromised by big money and being close to the Capital can spend more time doing the job.

I am curious how they implement it. Is there an internal memo that instructs how to shade the news?

sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
It was. The media fell for the bait and Hillary thought she had it in the bag and took her foot off the pedal. I never thought Hillary had any political savvy and this article shows why. Same with Kamela. Dem leadership has had a knack for picking candidates with no political sense.

Yes, probably. Lieu is always a lock here so he plays it safe. But still I needed to let him know that "the times, they are a changin'."

My suggested headline on such a piece would be: "New York Times Struggles to Tell the Truth."

sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I wish some journo would do an investigative piece on the NYT to expose how they make decisions internally. Is the soft pedaling, sane washing not to mention false equivalencies deliberate policy from editors or just incompetance by individual writers? Enquiring minds would like to know.

This is profoundly right. We need Dem leaders who don't cede the terms of the debate to the Rs. Or as Timothy Snyder would say, obeying in advance.
030
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
A setup for 2029 is the point. The overarching goal has to be electoral reform to prevent MAGA from ever gaining power again. If Dems don't do that we are back to the doom loop cycle of R destruction, D cleanup. Combine Reich's list with yours for some immediate rewards with long-term goals.

I don’t understand what you just wrote; check your grammar.
000
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
A Dem Congress really doesn't have much chance of getting laws enacted. Their main task will be investigation and exposure of Trump to set up 2028. That's why I think the public facing skills of the Speaker and Majority Leader will be more important than usual.
001
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
So you see defining the political middle is not so easy. It is a relative thing and a dynamic shifting one.
000
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
You need to rethink what progressive and conservative mean today. Trump/MAGA is regressive not conservative. So Dems are automatically more progressive relative to Rs. But how much more since last D majority? You really think voters merely want a return to, say, 2020? I don’t think so.
100
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Not in all states. If el Sayed wins Michigan then you have a progressive there. Turning purple states blue will also produce a bit more progressivity. Other states will still be blue but conservative. Overall a shift left if only a little.
000
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
That will not be the primary job if the Dems control Congress. Passing legislation will be easy with a majority. The hard part will be manipulating Trump and having the courage to do things like shutting down the government to make the legislation law. That is where Schmef and Jeffries fail.
000
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I see more Dems talking about Medicare for All or a public option (Sen. Duckworth). Rep. Clyburn in favor of expanding the SupCrt. Just a few examples. I think it's unmistakable the mood has shifted and the center with it. At any rate it's all speculation until the election.
000
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Bottom line for me is that Jeffires and Schumer, however effective they may arguably have been in the past, are not the leaders we need in the new environment.
110
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
There is also a public facing aspect of the leadership roles that Schumer and Jeffries haven't mastered. Witness Jeffries' recent fiasco where he got played by Kushner. Last year Schumer and Jeffries going hat-in-hand to the WH and getting "sombreroed." Make Trump come to Capital (sans mob).
110
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
There was a revealing profile of Jeffries in The New Yorker this year that showed Jeffries is an accomodationist rather than a leader of his caucus. Schumer probably even more so. The opposite of what will be needed in the new Congress.
110
sthendrix.bsky.social @sthendrix.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Yes, but Schumer did it with a Democratic President. The new congress will have a much tougher fight with Trump still in the WH. Also the political landscape has changed with the center moving left. Schumer and Jefffries are not equipped to say no to lobbyists or play hardball with their caucus.
