There is an idea, supported by many archaeologists, that the exploitation of marine resources was the hallmark of our species. Catching marine mammals required cognitive abilities that only we possessed. These theorists would do well to spend more time in the field. Difficulty? What difficulty?

An absolutely stunning photo! The 35m-long #Roman shipwreck, along with its cargo of 6,000 (!) amphorae was discovered in 2019 off the coast of the Greek Island of Kefalonia. It’s one of the largest Roman shipwrecks found in the Mediterranean. Photo: Ionian Aquarium 🏺 AncientBluesky
A large accumulation of amphorae scattered across the sandy ocean floor. The amphorae are densely clustered, with many partially buried in the seabed, forming the distinct shape of a ship. The scene is illuminated by dim, bluish underwater light.

An Eastern Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca) feeds on the carcass of a Golden Jackal (Canis aureus), in Hungary. Being familiar with the sister species, the Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti), it has been great to be able to make comparisons. @stewartfinlayson.bsky.social @gibgerry.bsky.social
