Prayers for John Beam, one of Oakland’s great heroes.

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 24/10/2025

Still delivering miracles, Mr. Curry. But lots of heroes in a fabulous Warriors early season comeback win. That Kuminga block on Jokic, for starters. That Butler 3. It all ruined Aaron Gordon’s career night in his home area. Wonderful game.

Mike Brown vs. Kenny Atkinson tonight, coaching the two teams that should make the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals, New York and Cleveland. Both got rings with the Warriors in 2022 under Kerr. Brown was lucky to be fired and get out of dead-end Sac with lots of money.

Tony Vitello. I’m all for spectacular or spectacular failure. Just no more 81-81s, and tough to see that mundane middle of the road option with Posey’s landmark managerial hire. We will all watch, for sure.

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 22/10/2025

Ah yes, Inside The NBA. New network but as necessary as ever. Shaq really loves the Warriors, by the way. Top 4, he says, if they stay healthy.

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 15/10/2025

Better get used to it. Almost all of their key players are signed through 2030, some like Betts, Ohtani and Yamamoto even longer.

000

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 15/10/2025

Brewers no match for these Dodgers. Not sure anybody is when they’re as full strength as they are now. Blowing away the competition even after banishing Conforto and Scott and their combined $33 million in salary. Most key guys for LA signed thru 2029, some even longer. Scary.

Possibly, but I’m sure Bengie has given Yadi some thoughts on the merits of SF.

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 29/09/2025

Hey, Giants, please don’t go backward in time and be bold. Here’s a name that needs to be on your list: Yadier Molina. Clean slate, bright future, hungry, friendship and kismet with Posey, a strong Hispanic presence for Devers, Adames and others, could take Bailey to new heights.

I wouldn’t feel too sorry for Bob Melvin. He’s getting a $5 million going-away package. But will he manage again? After five stops at age 63, it’s an interesting question. The A’s would likely take him back if Mark Kotsay left for some reason, but it’s hard to see that happening.

Just a few months after San Francisco shipped him up to Boston, Kyle Harrison has a chance to be the winning pitcher in a game at Fenway that sends the Red Sox to the postseason. Here's @davidlaurila.bsky.social on the adjustments Harrison has made with his new team:

The erstwhile San Francisco southpaw has augmented his repertoire since switching coasts.

I don’t know about anybody else, but I’m getting damned sick and angry of being labeled a corrupt radical left Democrat, which Trump and Co. seems to want to apply to ALL Democrats. That’s going to backfire badly.

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 26/09/2025

Why doesn’t Trump just save time and ask the Supreme Court if he can get away with absolutely everything? This horrible kangaroo court is grossly complicit in destroying the Constitution and the legal foundations of our country. Scary.

Best case scenarios for MLB playoffs heading into final weekend based on payroll: Top 10 payrolls: 8 teams (6 already assured). Second 10: 4 possible, but more likely 2. Third 10: 3, but more likely 2. Salary cap anybody? NFL does not have this buy-your-way-in issue.

Me, too. No need to stay up past 11 if you only want to see Kimmel or Colbert monologues. On YouTube three hours earlier here.

I get it that some urban markets don’t want to air Jimmy Kimmel but Seattle and Portland? I would expect more pushback to affiliates in those distinctly “blue,” freedom-conscious cities.

Agree on Plunkett as well, particularly after all the physical punishment through no fault of his own he had to take on crappy Patriots teams.

Nice to see Frank Gore up for the Pro Football Hall of Fame but if Gore gets in before Roger Craig, something’s wrong. It’s been wrong for years regarding Craig, as those who watched and chronicled him closely fully understand.

Horrible sports development: pro and college pre- and post-game panel shows trying to duplicate the irreverent vibe of Inside The NBA. Now you get no real information and lame attempts at humor. It’s like all the other insurance companies that that try to make a GEICO commercial.

The Great Waldo Pepper. Don’t go by the tepid reviews from 50 years ago. It was made in the 1970s when the competition was tough and lighter fare didn’t get its just due. Robert Redford at his most carefree. And the biplane aerial scenes are still dazzling.

Interesting that Bob Gibson has had such a nasty reputation for throwing at people and he’s 90th on the list, behind numerous “good guys” like Jim Kaat and Orel Hershiser. And good lord, Mr. Pinpoint Control Greg Maddux with 47 more plunks than Gibby.

Had to double-check, but the Giants’ 15-run output Friday was equal to the total number of runs they scored during their entire eight-game home losing streak from July 12-July 30 vs. Dodgers, Mets and Pirates. Beat Josh Dubow to that one.

A bit eerie to see Venus Williams playing in the U.S. Open at age 45. I covered her first professional match in 1994 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. She was 14.

Some guys Giants let go: LaMonte Wade, released by Angels; Luke Jackson, 7.71 ERA in Detroit, Jordan Hicks 6.60 ERA with Boston; Kyle Harrison, stuck in AAA; Michael Conforto .190 for Dodgers, Thairo Estrada, on the bench in Colorado, Yaz 4 HRs but .222 for KC; Camilo Doval 6.43 ERA in NY.

Why do these Little League umpires seem to be better than the major league guys?

000

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 13/08/2025

Just a guess, but the Giants have hit absolute rock bottom.

100

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 10/08/2025

Well, they traded two starters for Devers. For the long term, that should still prove a wise move. Birdsong is important, he has immense talent. They just need him to throw strikes. There was a time Randy Rodriguez couldn’t find the zone, either. He’s young, I think he’ll find himself.

000

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 10/08/2025

One error in 310 innings at Sac after making 18 errors at first base last year. Do you folks ever look at current stats? He’s made much improvement. Every indication is this guy wants to be great in every facet. Also appears to be a very quick learner.

000

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 10/08/2025

Mediocre thinking. You don’t have to pitch these guys every five days. Mix in Butto, Teng, Gage. You’re effectively out of the race. Look at everybody. BTW, the Giants aren’t in the protecting young arms business. They need to start winning. Many of the guys at AAA already push age viability anyway.

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 10/08/2025

Get Eldridge up in September. He’s earned it.

110

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 10/08/2025

Again, baloney. There’s one guy over 100 IP at Sac … barely. Same at Richmond. If they’re in their mid-20s with tired arms and that little work, they should just retire now.

110

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 10/08/2025

Baloney. Let’s see Tidwell. They traded for him, does he have a legit future here? Let’s see. Good first outing with Sac. Look at a 24-year-old, not a 42-year-old who definitely won’t be around in 2026. To be honest, I’d rather watch Mason Black or even Birdsong, even if they struggle.

100

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 10/08/2025

Time to move on from Verlander. Look to the future, Buster.

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 06/08/2025

Man, the A’s have some serious sticks. Nearly had a second four-homer game. Shea Langeliers only had three bombs, plus a double and single. 16 runs tonight, 24 hits. Too bad they have an owner who will figure out a way to screw up what looks to be a great team in the making.

010

Carl Steward @stewardsfolly.bsky.social · 04/08/2025

No question top Giants prospect Bryce Eldridge is making a strong offensive push right now in Triple-A — 10 homers in 117 ABs. But I’m watching his fielding numbers, too: just one error in 248 innings at Sac. That’s huge, huge improvement for a guy who made 18 errors at the position last year.
