Nice one. I saw the grey phal flock - but only 6 greys when I checked them. Lighthouse wall wins!

@markgolley.bsky.social @jamesrmccallum1.bsky.social thought of you both on 31st August '26 at Pendeen when this band-rumped petrel passed just beyond the rocks.... something of a carbon-copy of the (painful) 2009 experience but this time I remembered to step-back, look, and take it all in.

Sad news. I really liked Bill's laidback manner and kindly vibe - which he combined a razor sharp insight.

Quantifying spatial epidemiology in wildlife disease outbreaks is challenging. Here @jasonmatth.bsky.social shows how we can combine data sources from the recent highly pathogenic avian influenza panzootic to model contagion pathways and key epidemiological parameters using gannets as a model.

Dear Bluesky - any thoughts on the species of fish this white tern is carrying? It was taken in the Chagos. Many thanks

A dark-headed flava wagtail flying around Devoran, Cornwall on 19th May with a buzzy call - which didn't land - had me interested. You can hear it 3 times (if you listen carefully...) in the (rubbish) clip below. It'll remain a mystery but keen to garner views #UKrares #rarebirdsUK #UKbirding

Our new research shows that HPAI increased Northern Gannet mortality by a factor of ~6 and ~4 at two of the world’s largest colonies. We predict this impact will take almost two decades to recover from. #biologicalconservation #seabirds #hpai Full paper: doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2026.111887

New in @natrevbiodiv.nature.com: our review of the influence of #seabirds, via their nutrient transfer, on islands & adjacent marine ecosystems 🐦🏝️🪸 We highlight knowledge gaps & future directions ✨ "The circular seabird economy is critical for oceans, islands and people": doi.org/10.1038/s443...
Schematic diagram of the influence of seabirds on temperate and tropical near-shore marine systems.
Temperatre systems:
- Nutrient enrichment and predation on herbivorous invertebrates can lead to increased algal production
- Phytoplankton communities change, featuring more large-celled species
- Intertidal organisms incorporate seabird-enriched material by grazing on detritus and biofilm in tidepools
- Macroalgae biodiversity and primary production are boosted
Tropical systems:
- Mangrove leaf nutritional quality increases
- Corals recover faster after bleaching events
- Fish biomass increases across different trophic groups
- Pelagic and benthic consumers' foraging behaviour shifts
- Parrotfish grazing and bioerosion rates increase
- Fish grow larger

New research led by @alicetrevail.bsky.social combines tracking data to show the value of large marine protected areas in encompassing diverse megafauna movements 🐢 doi.org/10.1111/1365... @jappliedecology.bsky.social @iomarinescience.bsky.social @exetermarine.bsky.social @zslofficial.bsky.social
Photos of a reef manta ray, red-footed booby, and a hawsbill turtles with biologging devices attached to them. The journal logo is also featured, alongside the article title and author list. Some text reads: "Tracking data reveal that very large marine protected areas offer protection for mobile marine megafauna including benthic foragers (turtles), pelagic planktivores (manta ray), and oceanic predators (seabirds)".

Pallas's Reed Bunting! The first for the UK was found at Fair Isle on the day I was born, so I've always wanted to see one here. I now owe Alex a pint after he found this gorgeous peerie thing in the Wirvie Burn this morning! #BirdingScotland
