When I asked @stevielichous.bsky.social to coverup a tattoo they had done of a time turner and replace it with another, they didn’t hesitate to say yes. I will love this Star Trek tattoo for many years to come. #FuckJKR #StarTrek #Tattoo #TattooSanFrancisco #QueerStarTrek

A photo of a back of a white woman with the focus on the Starship Enterprise tattoo with a rainbow nebula on the left side of her upper and mid-back. There is pink, white, and blue at the top. To the left of the ship are purple, blue, and green. She is standing in a tattoo shop facing a mirror next to a yellow wall. The tattoo artist is reflected in the mirror taking the photo.

Imagine having so few friends outside your own ethnic group, so little tastes outside what you already know, that acting like you can’t understand a different accent in English is some kind of flex. I love accents and relish in the differences in English spoken across the globe. (1)

"It is my nature..." 🦂🐢 Scorpion and turtle tattoos, by @stevielichous.bsky.social Like the scorpion, humans have compulsions they can't repress, even when it is in their best interest... I can't change others, but I can use my own strength to protect myself. (Full story in alt text)

Inspired by the fable of the scorpion and the turtle, which is a variation on the more common version featuring a frog in place of the turtle.

In the standard version, a scorpion wants to cross a river. Because it can’t swim, it asks a passing frog to carry it across on its back. The frog hesitates, concerned that the scorpion will sting. The scorpion reassures the frog: “If I sting you, we both die—you have nothing to worry about.” The frog is convinced, but halfway across the river, the scorpion stings it. “Why?” gasps the frog, as they both drown. “I couldn’t help it,” says the scorpion. “It’s my nature.”

In the turtle variation, the scorpion still (tries to) sting, but scrapes harmlessly off the turtle's shell, leaving the turtle peeved but unscathed.

Like the scorpion, humans have compulsions they can't repress, even when it is in their best interest. I see this as a story about trusting your intuition (and not allowing others to convince you otherwise), anticipating & mitigating risk, and showing kindness while enforcing boundaries. I can't change others, but I can use my own strength to protect myself, trying to be a turtle instead of a frog.
