Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 8hThe compositor/bar is coming along! Happy I got the bar working with workspaces and the clock. Working on the other widgets here soon now too. 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 13hWas seeing this with a custom keyboard build with RMK earlier today, and some with some compositor work 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 13hStarted using nix flakes more in everyday development, and now I can’t tell if it’s 5.5 models generally or it correlating using nix with it, but I’ve seen Claude wanting to fork open source things and fix underlying bugs way more often. Anybody else noticing this? 101
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 27/09/2026Opus 5.5 has been great at finding/solving weird edge case bugs. Found some in Smithay too that I want to review and share upstream. Glad most of the projects I’m using in this space don’t outright decline AI usage (though some definitely discourage it). Just want to leave things better, ya know? 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 27/09/2026Eyyyy! Got scootbg into a pretty solid place. Claude’s putting some finishing touches on it for the flake. Thinking I’ll eventually clean it up and make it an easy nix module to do a whole desktop experience. Probably gonna do a bar next, because why not. #scoot #scootbg #nixos #wayland 100
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 27/09/2026Just found out that Ohio has some express BMV machines in drug stores. I will 100% go to a Drug Mart before having to sit in line at the BMV. 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 26/09/2026Yesssss got scoot (my new Wayland compositor) to build in a Claude code cloud agent with devenv 🎉. Planning on expanding to build a bar, bg, and all too to fill out a shell. 110
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 26/09/2026I had moved to using a lot more Sonnet+Opus/Fable advisor, but it’s so good I’ve been finding myself using Opus for basically everything again. So cool to see them give a free reset too. Definitely flew through that fast 🤣 010
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 25/09/2026It’s kinda wild. I’ve seen some people start moving to an external cron since the jobs will kick off fine, it’s just the cron trigger itself 110
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 17/09/2026On purpose? 😆 Earlier today I wondered why nix was taking its sweet time... Then was far enough that it felt silly to cancel it. Thought I just updated the flake for the package I had been working on 🤦♂️ 010
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 17/09/2026Got my new compositor running enough to run noctalia with it. Definitely underestimated the things I’d have to implement to make that work smoothly. Been a good way to get things rounded out more quickly though. Prob gonna make a custom bar and stuff to go with it. 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 17/09/2026Me: “I’m feeling very declarative” Angelina: “I can tell!” Me: “Just like I like my operating systems” A: “I don’t like the turn this is taking…” Me: “Can I talk to you about NixOS?” A: *turns away quickly* 140
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 16/09/2026Me after giving up on a busted remote, trying to turn on cartoons: “We’ll just have to get a new remote” My 4yo: “Does that mean we’re selling our house?” 🤣🤣🤣 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 12/09/2026Progress! Next up the optional GPU backend (CPU-first for easier container use), then all the stuff that lets Waybar and stuff work. Not at all settled on the name, and it’s technically a compositor not a pure WM but yolo. 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 12/09/2026Yeah webtop is pretty cool. Wayland stuff is new to me. I’ve been experimenting a lot lately with using Claude to push into areas above my head and as it works, slowly gaining some more understanding. Been a lot of fun! 120
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 12/09/2026Got my old M2 MacBook Air running NixOS yesterday too, and feels good to be baaaaaaack. 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 12/09/2026This weekend’s fun — I’m building out a Wayland compositor that works well in NixOS based, webtop style containers as well as microVMs where you don’t have a GPU to allocate. 220
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 10/09/2026Tonight’s experiment: NixOS running in a webtop-style container. Got it working with Niri already, seeing if I can get a couple other DEs working for fun. 010
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 09/09/2026I used to use “write config to enable docker on NixOS” as a fun test for early AI models. Till mid/late last year it seemed like most made up good sounding answers that were always wrong. 100
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 09/09/2026Hmmm wonder which node it is…. 🤣 Most spikes weren’t that big, but having some of my logs pushed over too helped confirm. 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 09/09/2026I love having good homelab o11y. I’m running Talos, and just realized why etcd is mad half the time (honeycomb canvas FTW). Accidentally put a slow microSD card in one of the Pi4s last time I redid it 🤦♂️ I’ll get around to adding SSDs eventually, but was awesome to find a quick root cause. 120
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 09/09/2026Anybody running RMK? I’ve got two Ferris sweeps (one on ZMK, one on QMK), but thinking about getting my Miryoku based layout working on some good ol rust based firmware. The wireless one has nice!nanos in it, but the Bluetooth seems finicky and possibly like not mapped right #keyboards 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 07/09/2026Juuuust about got my actions runner fork with otel support where I want it. Been running it for a while. Otel semconv for CI/VCS and all 🎉 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 07/09/2026I wish GitHub supported some kind of ARC runners for user-wide repo support similar to org support. I know you can name which repos, but love the simplicity for orgs and ARC runners. 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 06/09/2026I’ve been enjoying my Mac as the daily driver while ssh/tmux for development work to a kata container in my homelab cluster running Talos (and Fedora for the dev container) 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 06/09/2026Seems like every year around this time I get the urge to jump back into tiling WMs. Time to try out OmniWM on my Mac! 100
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 02/09/2026Who all is going to #CloudNative #KubeCon NA this year? Finally able to make it this year 🎉 Planning to hit up o11y day too Any tips for first time attendance? 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 29/08/2026It’s been a lot of fun slowly building freshstrings.app for guitar maintenance. Thinking mobile is next once I add a few more features.freshstrings.appFreshStrings 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 13/06/2026Bought a fountain pen on a whim and think I’m hooked. I’d been going all in with AI note taking, assistants, etc. I was getting solid coaching notes too but feeling like I couldn’t keep anything in my head anymore. It’s refreshing going back to pen and paper for tasks and notes. 240
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 04/04/2026Heck yeah. Think I got a diesel-libsql crate working with full native OTel support 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 17/03/2026Should software have always been this fun? Also, yeah. 🤷♂️ 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 17/03/2026Building with AI has made me even more healthily detached from what I make for fun. Naming used to be hard and feel permanent. Now I just enjoy making up names that make me laugh. Did I release a crate this morning for ts client generation from Axum routes called axfetchum? Yeah. And I’m delighted. 200
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 16/03/2026Haha perfect! Was just about to say too — create board is awesome. Haven’t had a chance to see, but when I asked for an edit, it made a full copy and new one. It’d be awesome to see it move toward edits too 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 16/03/2026MCP creating boards is 🔥. Would it be possible to make it auto size panels a little larger? They’re all small enough to need to be scrolled vertically on desktop. That’d help it feel totally hands off when making via MCP 111
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 15/03/2026Will do! It’s been great so far. Looking forward to doing a bit of chaos engineering to see how it feels troubleshooting with it more. Worked great helping me shift to make the Postgres template board work with CNPG based clusters last night. Much easier than remapping by hand. 020
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 15/03/2026@charity.wtf and @lizthegrey.com’s content has shaped a lot of my thoughts on o11y. Happy to have finally moved the lab. Know we haven’t all met yet, but wanted to say thanks for all the great work you and your teams do. 241
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 15/03/2026Finally moved the homelab to @honeycomb.io and the o11y 2.0 gains for agents hype is real. Game changer using it with an agent. Fixed a weird tracing issue with like 2 prompts with Claude (using the skill/MCP) to review, find and fix. 2263
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 09/03/2026I built a CLI to get around some of the forgejo limitations, but when using with remote agents, they all are super determined to find that endpoint that doesn’t exist. 000
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 09/03/2026Good so far except for the missing job logs endpoint. The community seems a bit fractured too without a fully officially CLI which has made AI usage of it more difficult. Gonna give GitLab a shot on some personal projects with them continuing free self hosted minutes. 120
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 09/03/2026It’s been a blast building more than ever with AI. Legit explored more ideas in the last 3 months than probably the last year or more. Didn’t see myself running out of private GHA minutes, but with the new move to paid self hosted, moved to Forgejo. 210

Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 20/06/2025You can get kinda close to the Cline Plan/Act stuff with Copilot by using Ask mode to plan what you’ll do asking it to break down the steps, then in the same chat switching to Agent and asking it to do it. The main thing I love about Roo is orchestrator. It’ll break it down and push out subtasks. 020
Steve Yackey @steveyackey.com · 20/06/2025If you want to give Cline or RooCode a try too, you can also use your Copilot license, it’ll just count in your monthly requests. In the model options it’s got experimental support for VS Code LM API. That said, your Claude Pro will give Claude Code access too, which is pretty great too! 120
