Perched on a gnarly, weathered tree branch that cuts diagonally across the frame, this magnificent Australian Darter bird has thrown both wings wide open like dramatic velvet capes to brake against the air. Its slender, snake-like neck and dagger-like yellow bill are held with laser-focused poise, while its bright, alert eye tracks the final inch of touchdown. The buff-coloured chest and intricate dark wing feathers contrast sharply against the gray water and soft-focus, misty shoreline in the background. It's caught mid-stride lifting one comically large, fully splayed orange webbed foot in the air before it makes contact with the bark.
