somebody once told me parasites 'get' well over 60% of Neps, Phyllos etc - too easy for these micro-wasps to spot mines and leaf folds....

This bird has the greatest carbon footprint provider of any in recent years surely. Some people have been 7 times!

Pity there was no larva in 3rd image - colour of that could have clinched an interesting potential mine! Last W Mids Atlas records show mine at SK11 in Sept 2002 and Trench Wood Wo in Oct 1995 so seems to have dropped off the menu.

Worth measuring the width of the 'isthmus' on the juncta Burnished Brass" If its 4mm or more a contender for Cryptic Burnished Brass - if indeed that actually exists outside Asia?!

Not a lot of climate change as we skirted Manchester Airport at 07:45 this morning - thick drizzle and light rain (is it always the same?)

Was delighted to get an invite into Andrew Gardener's Stourbridge home and superb garden, just in VC37, yesterday to see his rather tired Passenger which had arrived overnight!

Trouble with Common English Names - no consistency; some what adults look like, some what larva looks like, some after what larvae feed on others plucked out of folklore myths! Make yer mind up lads! Bit like Moth VAR!!!

Had the POM lure out since Sunday. Yesterday evening this was potted up from inside. First for VC37. Following one in Redditch on Friday night (Warks?). Not sure if 2 of us locals have been extremely lucky - no obvious NW movement from Upper Thames area broadcast yet... Cydia interscindana

I may be incorrect but I think its obvious look-alke Oxypterix unicolorella has pretty all darkish antennae (IMO Ben!)

After last year's single near Stourport VC37, 2 more Bohemannia auriciliellas tapped out of nearby Blackthorn in last week. Can we learn something about its Biology that few Brits seemed to have cottoned onto yet.

My colleague at Stourport-on-Severn is currently netting 15 to 30 species of micro a day, locally during the sunny spells. He found 3rd for Worcs yesterday. I think the moth-ing community gets too hung up on moth-traps and gardens!

A couple more from the saltmarsh session at Pegwell Bay, Kent last Friday the 1st May. What looks like a great example of Scrobipalpa obsoletella and a rather bland Platyedra subcinerea.

Thought to be extinct - a colony of White-spotted Pinions were discovered in Worcs in mid 2000s. The habitat does not look that special and the elms still heavily diseased ! Have seen it at Wicken Fen though so not a lost cause!

Pammene agnotana on wood near a lure at one of it's central England strongholds mid-afternoon yesterday. Probably under-recorded - I tried for 6 hours with MOL/FUN/SKI at an Oxon woodland last year, around this time in strong sunshine - not a sniff!

Bit of an enigma - Acleris lipsiana at what was thought to be England's best location for the species. Ecstatic with the first, 'comfortably numb' by the last at dawn. I can confirm it is now. (Thanks to Iain Leach for support on the night and the image)

Best looking Moth at Monkwood NR (Worcs) on Friday night was this 'conjoined stigma' Common Quaker? The Pale Pinion was a close second.

One of 80 male Bankesia conspurcatella to HYL lure in southern England yesterday, in calm, early morning sunshine by a old weathered fence from 07:00 to 08:40 at least. They are out there!

Only my third ever garden Yellow Horned here in Worcester; (last was 24 Feb 2011). There was an easterly breeze so guess it's just wafted in from nearby Trench Wood or beyond. 10 other species including 2 Diurnea fagella.

Following a tip-off via IRecord, I found several mines of Phyllonorycter pastorella on a small NR near Worcester Uni on Thursday. Image of Crack Willow leaf with typical almost rectangular mine and pupal case protruding. The first adult emerged early afternoon today. Another regional first!

To say that the history of Buttoned Snout in Worcs is puzzling is a understatement! Only 3 records between 1899 and 1975, despite an extensive Hop Growing area west of River Severn. Gap of 43 years and now resident in small numbers. Waited 21 years here at Warndon then 2 come along in one night!
