Why PRIDE

Because somewhere
a child is a heron
in a sea full of salmon
who encourage them
to convert wings
into fins.

Fish cannot teach
a bird to take flight.
So every June we flock
to the heavens
to remind them the sky
was never a sin.

Sure, I could have subjected myself to hours of lies, countless attacks, and invented "victories" in the #SOTU, but somehow catching up with Oscar Nominee One Battle After Another seemed like near-perfect counterprogramming. (Illustration by Chirrikenstein for The New Yorker)

"I thought it was important for people to be in the streets. But that couldn't last. You needed a record. It would be my job to publish the voices, the books, the ideas of African Americans. And that would last."--Toni Morrison, born this day in 1931. #booksky #readthisbook #blackhistory

This amazing poem by @aracelisxgirmay.bsky.social , particularly these lines, has been on my mind and heart a lot lately. Full poem at poets.org/poem/you-are... #poems #poetry #hopeinthedark #resist #persist
You are who I love, writing letters, calling the senators, you who, with the seconds of your body (with your time here), arrive on buses, on trains, in cars, by foot to stand in the January streets against the cool and brutal offices, saying: YOUR CRUELTY DOES NOT SPEAK FOR ME

You are who I love, you struggling to see

You struggling to love or find a question

You better than me, you kinder and so blistering with anger, you are who I love, standing in the wind, salvaging the umbrellas, graduating from school, wearing holes in your shoes

You are who I love
weeping or touching the faces of the weeping

For Renee Nicole Good
Killed by ICE. on January 7, 2026
by Amanda Gorman
They say she is no more,
That there her absence roars,
Blood-blown like a rose.
Iced wheels flinched & froze.
Now, bare riot of candles,
Dark fury of flowers,
Pure howling of hymns.

If for us she arose,
Somewhere, in the pitched deep of our grief,
Crouches our power, The howl where we begin,
Straining upon the edge of the crooked crater
Of the worst of what we've been.
Change is only possible,
& all the greater,
When the labour
& bitter anger of our neighbors
Is moved by the love
& better angels of our nature. What they call death & void,
We know is breath & voice;
In the end, gorgeously,
Endures our enormity.

You could believe departed to be the dawn
When the blank night has so long stood.
But our bright-fled angels will never be fully gone,
When they forever are so fiercely Good.

So many terrific #poems in Poetry is Not a Luxury: Poems for All Seasons, like this beautiful little heartbreaker by Sophie Klahr #poetry #nowreading #booksky
Tender
Sophie Klahr
I spend late morning weeping with the news:
a black bear with burnt paws is euthanized
along the latest wildfire's newest edge.
It was crawling on its forearms, seeking
a place to rest. I Google more; reports
leak out: the bear had bedded down behind
a house, below a pine, to lick its paws.
In hours before its end, officials named
It Tenderfoot, though some reports report
just Tender. Later, I will teach a class
where well discuss the lengths of lines in poems.
I'll say a sonnet is a little song
to hold a thing that otherwise cannot
be held: a lonely thing; a death; a bear.

A friend sent this important reminder to me this morning in honor of my birthday, James Baldwin once again speaking necessary truth across the years, in a time when showing compassion, care, and love, to “magnify each other’s light” is critical work. #hopeinthedark #wisdom #inspiration
"The longer I live, the more deeply I learn that love — whether we call it friendship or family or romance — is the work of mirroring and magnifying each other's light"—James Baldwin

How I wish this Mary Oliver poem was not so prescient about this terrible moment we are all living through #poetry #poems #truth
OF THE EMPIRE
We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.

Loving @otroedgargomez.bsky.social’s latest, Alligator Tears: A Memoir in Essays, which is full of moving, beautiful writing like this passage and more than a few laughs, too. #booksky #lgbtqwriters
“One of my biggest fears as a child was that I wouldn't be ready for the rapture: the day when, out of nowhere, all the perfect, sinless people would be sucked up to the sky and the regular ones would be left behind. I'm not particularly religious anymore, but some days it
eels like we're already living it. When I look around me,I don't see
any perfect people; just normal, flawed human beings trying to make the best with what they have. The volunteers at Love Wins, who are up before the sun is out to feed families in the neighborhood. Lesly and the students of Mirror, who insist on a life that is dignified and beautiful. The friends who housed and fed me in the pandemic, the co-workers I shared birthdays with in break rooms. My mom, who put on a pair of giant black sunglasses and lipstick to bring fruit to the ladies at her local pantry.

It frustrates me to think that the people I love may never be rewarded with everything they deserve, but I'm comforted by the fact that they don't let the current bleakness of the world keep them from fighting to make it a better place. Every day they claim their joy, dreaming out loud with me on the phone, dancing in line outside Friend's, marching through the streets.

I don't know what happens after, when this is all over. But wher-
ever they're going, that's where I'm trying to go too.”

Great piece by Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny, and with some marching orders for us all. open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p...
"As for the rest of us: Make sure you are talking to people and doing something. The logic of "move fast and break things," like the logic of all coups, is to gain quick dramatic successes that deter and demoralize and create the impression of inevitability. Nothing is inevitable. Do not be alone and do not be dismayed. Find someone who
is doing something you admire and join them."
