This year the Jewish Film Festival will be at the Castro for far fewer days because it is much more expensive including having to pay to put on & remove the seats.

Courtney Williams is a courageous whistleblower who exposed rampant gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the US Army's Delta Force. Unlike many of my sources, she was adamant that she be quoted by name and made no attempt to conceal her identity because her actions were entirely above-board, legitimate, and admirable.

In an indictment ridden with embarrassing factual errors, Trump's rogue DOJ, which has been losing cases at a record pace, claims that Courtney leaked classified material — but has not specified what that allegedly classified "national defense information" was.

Is it classified that many Delta Force operators and officers sexually harass and discriminate against women in the workplace? Because that was the main thrust of Courtney's testimony.

Every day, without any legal consequence, former Delta Force and SEAL Team 6 operators go on podcasts and YouTube shows and incidentally reveal exactly the sorts of "tactics, techniques, and procedures" that the DOJ now claims it was a crime for Courtney to reveal in the course of relating her harrowing narrative of discrimination and harassment.

The DOJ indicted Courtney not to protect such information from disclosure but to retaliate against a women who only sought to improve workplace conditions for female soldiers and civilian employees of the military.

Ironically, while the FBI was monitoring my phone and investigating Courtney on vague
and weak charges, the perpetrators of half a dozen murders involving Fort Bragg soldiers involved in the drug trade have gone entirely unsolved. A real police agency would go after real criminals instead of engaging in this sort of penny-ante political theater.

Courtney Williams is a veteran, a mother, and a patriotic American. She has committed
no crime. Her arrest and imprisonment is an outrage.
I am confident that the DOJ's slapdash indictment, full of misleadingly juxtaposed quotations taken out of context, will fall apart upon careful scrutiny. In the m…

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."
—Emma Lazarus, from "The New Colossus"
(1887), inscribed on the Statue of Liberty

In her most recent paintings, Sherald has responded directly to the increasing threats, violence, and legislation against gay, transgender, and gender nonconforming people across the United States.

Her recasting of the Statue of Liberty radically redefines this iconic symbol of American freedom and demands that the ideal of acceptance inscribed on the sculpture be applied unequivocally to all citizens, regardless of gender, identity, or sexual orientation.

Langston Hughes was photographed by members of Group f.64 when he spent time in Carmel & is included in Around Group f.64: Legacies & Counterhistories in Bay Area Photography through July at #SFMOMA www.sfmoma.org/exhibition/a...
Langston Hughes By-the-Sea

"The blue curve of the bay with its rocks and pines here at Carmel is something to go crazy about," Langston Hughes (1901-1967) once wrote to a friend.

The young poet was taken with Carmel-by-the-Sea, like many other artists who flocked to the reclusive and peaceful shores of Monterey County. Hughes was invited to the town in 1932 by art patron Noël Sullivan, who offered him a cottage, cook, and German shepherd by the name of Greta.

Hughes was a writer and activist, and the intersection of this work informed both his creative pursuits and political organizing in California. He crossed paths with Group f.64-sitting for portraits with several members-but he also complicated the collective's broader relationship with politics.

Hughes and Edward Weston separately attended meetings at the Carmel chapter of the Communist-leaning John Reed Club, and Hughes enlisted the local creative community into events for racial justice.

Alongside other radical residents of Carmel, Hughes demanded political action for Black life, from advocating for the wrongly imprisoned Scottsboro Boys of Alabama to supporting the 1934 West Coast longshoremen's strikes.

Through Hughes, we can ponder the wonders of Carmel's landscapes; the jubilance of leisure, creativity, and friendship; and the weight of anti-Blackness as it permeates the purported tranquility of such beachside retreats.

The curators wish to thank Paula B. Freedman for sharing her extensive research on Edward Weston and Langston Hughes's Carmel intersections at early stages in the planning of this gallery.Photo of Langston Hughes by Sibyl AnikeefCover of Scottsboro Limited by Langston Hughes Wall text for Consuelo Kanaga photo of Hughes in the previous post.

Langston Hughes ca. 1934, printed 1992

Brooklyn Museum, printed from negative courtesy the Estate of Wallace B. Putnam

Writer Langston Hughes regularly visited Northern California.

Kanaga and Hughes met through mutual acquaintances, and both frequented Carmel-by-the-Sea's John Reed Club, a leftist intellectual organization.

While in Carmel in 1934, Hughes arranged an auction for the Scottsboro Boys Defense Fund, which aided nine young Black men wrongly convicted of raping two white women in Alabama and sentenced to death.
Hughes gathered manuscripts, artworks, and other objects from members of his creative community to sell in support of the fund. Kanaga's donation to the cause is not known, but it could have been one of her many portraits of Hughes.
