Excellent video on what the scientific community, and mathematics in particular, worries about in relation to recent AI advances. Spoiler: it's not about their jobs.

Klopt.

In Run-4 we will be able to do this fully hadronic with the track trigger, and reach even much better sensitivity. Then no question CMS will be in the lead on this channel: ATLAS won't have the track trigger, and LHCb has less luminosity.

My student Soumya who graduated on this result continues now for a postdoc in the group of Xabi at Santiago de Compostela. Xabi originally proposed the channel, but then recently made the switch to CMS...

Woohoo! Paper accepted for publication! It was this one: arxiv.org/abs/2605.27875 I'm really proud of this 🥳. The channel was originally suggested for LHCb, but we did it with CMS first (though with muon trigger). Excellent unique sensitivity, connecting smoothly between prompt and displaced decays.

Observation of single top-quark production in the $s$-channel in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector
The first single-experiment observation of single top-quark production in the $s$-channel is presented. Measurements of this process are essential to fully characterize the electroweak interactions of...

010
Steven Lowette @stevenlowette.bsky.social · 07/10/2026

Steven Lowette @stevenlowette.bsky.social · 07/10/2026

The 2026 Physics Nobel Prize to Francis Halzen is well deserved! I wrote the attached explainer for the public from the perspective of someone who has worked in this field and known Francis for decades. I welcome helping sharing it. Congratulations to Francis and all! medium.com/@beacom.7/ho...

Nowadays this pioneering work is put in practise by my colleagues (VUB, ULB, many others), who are building an in-ice radio detector for neutrinos in Greenland, as a pathfinder for an eventual full scale version in the upgrade of IceCube on the South Pole. To me this shows how visionary he is.

A few years ago, I worked though this paper from Halzen et al in all its detail: "Electromagnetic Pulses from High Energy Showers: Implications for Neutrino Detection" It makes the theoretically underpinned case for radio detection of neutrinos. To me this showed what a versatile physicist he is.

Weg sfeer...

I'll be talking this morning at our internal CMS Data Analysis School, a full week of intense training for newcomers in CMS. More than 60 "students" packed in CERN B40's Salle Bohr - fun! Let's hope I don't bore them too much with the "administrative" part of doing CMS physics analysis ;)

The chain of steps to make a submission in CMS is quite complex. We'd make errors with half of them, at least. And another quarter would get delayed because the PI didn't read their email 😉 All solvable, but would be chaos initially.
