Well I'm being weird because I'm leaving branches separate forever, as a learning aid. I suppose I could have like N different repos instead. Trying to show the progression of adding r9y to a baseline simple app.

arrange them by "nines" of availability (like 99.9%, 99.99%, etc). also consider changes to the app itself. can we run parallel, independent frontends, can we partition the database? heck, are we even doing retries with exponential backoff yet?

Steve McGhee @stevemcghee.dev · 04/12/2025

In here we will introduce radical improvements to the system which might not be cost-effective for everyone. Make a new branch and come up with a plan that includes mulit-region, multi-database, multi-cloud mitigations.

It's my favorite day! It's the 38th anniversary of the Max Headroom signal broadcast intrusion! 1st incident lasted 25s during the 9PM news on WGN-TV in Chicago; The 2nd, 2hrs later, lasted ~90s on PBS affiliate WTTW during Dr. Who. You can watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqge...

Happy birthday to be best meme in existence. The earliest known posting of this genius image was 14 years ago today.

A picture of a black dog. A hand is holding up an old school phone handset to the dog’s mouth and ear, like it is talking on the phone. The dog has a big smile on its face and the caption reads “Hello, yes this is dog.”

Generally "halting releases" is just shorthand for "only push reliability fixes" but even given that, I'm arguing that it isn't often a great idea. It has a lot of knock on effects.

020

Steve McGhee @stevemcghee.dev · 11/12/2024

When your SLO error budget is breached, what do you do? Immediately, indefinitely halt releases? What if it's a brand new budget that you don't have any confidence in? What if the team is undergoing so much strife that another beating will not improve morale? My point: don't be a zealot.
