It’s hard to argue against “Rio” - three absolute bangers for singles and absolutely no fillers - imho “The Chauffeur” is the best thing they’ve done. That being said, as SWMBO would agree, the filler-free “All You Need Is Now” runs it pretty close…

Arguably before their time, I will willingly go to my grave proclaiming Dolly Mixture as one of the most influential bands of the post-punk era.

The 80s of my yoof was littered with loads of great female (or female-fronted) bands: Dolly Mixture, Girls at Our Best, Marine Girls, Everything But The Girl, Strawberry Switchblade, The Chefs, Grab Grab The Haddock, Mari Wilson with The Imaginations, Trixie’s Big Red Motorbike, Talulah Gosh...

Tbf this has been on the cards since the start of the season. In over 50 years of supporting the Mighty Us this has to be the worst squad I’ve had to endure and so I fully expect we’ll do a Newcastle on Birmingham next week!

seriously looking forward to this based on their @bandcamp.com releases… and while I usually take “for fans of” or “sounds like” recommendations with a pinch of salt, this is right on the money - especially with the fuzzed-up jangle guitars and slightly off-kilter vocals.

Also two games with a lot of similarities. Both have a natural ebb and flow, and at their heart it’s about the duel between the player with the ball versus the player with the bat. Ample room for both in my book…

An excuse to give the album a metaphorical spin… Gotta agree with the “songs about falling apart and coming together, but not necessarily in that order”; A perfect mix of bittersweet, world-weary resignation and brutally honest matter-of-factness, played out against a cinemagraphic soundtrack...

Thought provoking thread and I have to agree in so much that the decisions I was confident to make in the early 80s, I’d have never have made if presented with the same options in today.

Tbf I still have a presence over there, but it really is a toxic cesspit. If more artists, labels and my bloody football team(!!!) moved over here I’d delete my account in a heart-beat (reserving the right to have a burner account to take pot shots at the Ketamine Space Kadet…)

Artists and Indie labels are forever (and rightly) complaining about derisory streaming rates, yet when they release a new album the click-through link offers you all the usual streaming suspects yet doesn’t point to @bandcamp.com, where you can actually buy both physical and digital…

As I said, following the Dems playbook will be a recipe for disaster for the left / centre-left. My fear is that the red tory is going to make Labour an irrelevance, especially given the UK’s not fit for purpose FOTP electoral system.

stevejinsocal @stevejinsocal.bsky.social · 03/02/2025
Labour have adopted the Dems playbook, are alienating their base and are sleep walking to an electoral defeat.

If you read any of you’d have noticed their ownership has been toadying up to Trump.

stevejinsocal @stevejinsocal.bsky.social · 03/02/2025
The seeds of the Democrats increasing irrelevance with the nomination of Biden in 2020 where rather than running with a truly progressive agenda they decided that being not as bad as the Repugs was somehow a long term strategy.

stevejinsocal @stevejinsocal.bsky.social · 03/02/2025
Media ownership is ensuring they’re cozying up to Trump. Even The Guardian has allowed itself to be pulled rightward and isn’t beyond betraying its legacy as can be seen with the shameful treatment of The Observer.

Meta’s contrinution to my feed wasn’t political, just spam I wasn’t the least bit interested in and ads that annoyed me. Unfortunately my LinkedIn feed- given the industry I worked in - was full of insidious MAGAt flavoured threads

Your inference was that Biden got things right domestically… As far as the electorate was concerned, ‘fraid not. It was obvious that Trump was going to win so I bailed from the US 15 months ago (never did quite forswear allegiance and fidelity to foreign princes…)

Gave up Farcebook(sic) years ago - too much shite and ads appearing in my feed. I ditched LinkedIn as it had already become Facebook for narcissists. As to the platform formally known as Twitter, the only reason I’m still there is to debunk Elmo and his right whinge trolls…

2/. He should have decided not to run much sooner - cognotive health issues dogged him throughout his Presidency. Ultimately though the DNC and the decision to nominate him in 2020 was the key to his defeat. The US was crying out for change, what they got was the Dem’s corporate man.

1/. Biden got a lot right but failed to “sell” his accomplishments to US voters, seriously underestimated the impact of inflation and the economy on the element of the electorate he needed to “win”. He (and the Dems) failed to convincein the court of public opinion Jan 6th on Trump and the GOP

I was a student during the “back then” time period. Had a student railcard and a trusty two wheel steed. FWIW I have no issue with solar or renewable infrastructure. If I look out of my window I can see a wind turbine - majestic looking piece of industrial architecture.

This is due to a lack of joined-up planning. A combination of the two (for each home if possible, else localised micro grids) would go a long way towards domestic self-sufficiency. Still going to need GW of renewables and tbh anything which puts off second-homers and incoming NIMBYs is OK by me
