I have been working on societal impacts of language technology since late 2016, and my nightmare example since pretty early on has been using automatic transcription in emergency services systems. And today I learn it's happening *in my own city* www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news... Short 🧵>>

The Seattle Fire Department started using AI technology during live 911 calls in 2023. There hasn't been any public review process.

My plea is that you recognize this and act on it with justice. Please significantly increase funding for front-line library staff without demanding an increase in hours. Steve Del Vecchio

This work that library workers do everyday is extraordinary. It is also demanding, stressful, and at times, traumatizing. Yet this largely non-privileged workforce is one of the least well compensated and least well supported of out city employees.

The library is defined by love and generosity. It is the only place in our city where anyone can go without explaining or identifying themselves and be welcomed; a place where kind, caring, and expert workers will endeavor to help you with what you want or need.

I have been a library user for over 65 years. I have also been a library volunteer, supporter, and worker for much of that time. The public library is a remarkable, unique, and almost miraculous service in a society and culture that is largely defined by greed, power, and profit for the few.

My name is Steve Del Vecchio. I live in Wedgwood. I am strongly in favor of the amendments proposed by council members Foster, Juarez, Lin, Rick, and Strauss. Without them this levy will not meet the needs of the people of Seattle.

I’m speaking tonight at the Seattle City Council public hearing on the proposed levy in support of The Seattle Public Library. Here is what I’ll be saying to the council:
