I photographed this Northern Bobwhite near Fort Supply Lake in Oklahoma. I saw several coveys in the area.

This Water Moccasin seemed just as curious about me as I was about the frogs at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. I spotted it watching me from the vegetation along the water’s edge while I was photographing frogs.

A young Eastern Bluebird stopped on this rock in my Arkansas yard, showing off those bright blue feathers and a little hint of rusty color on the chest.

This Carolina Wren was putting on quite a show in my Arkansas yard. Tail up, feathers fluffed, and calling with plenty of attitude. These little birds may be small, but they sure know how to make themselves heard.

I caught this opossum on video, and something doesn’t look normal!

Two White-tailed Does pause in thick summer vegetation at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. They blended in so well that only their alert faces and those big ears gave them away.

Caught in midair, this Ruby-throated Hummingbird shows off those brilliant green feathers and the incredible wing control that makes hummingbirds so much fun to photograph.

This Carolina Wren is always fun to photograph, but what makes it even more special is that I still have one that will occasionally eat right from my hand.

Activity at my hummingbird feeders here in Arkansas is starting to slow down. That’s usually a good sign that fall migration is getting close. I’m still seeing a few Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, but the busy summer crowds are beginning to thin out. I’ll keep the feeders filled for the late travelers.

This American Bird Grasshopper picked an unusual perch when it landed right on my truck at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma.

A Pearl Crescent showing off those bold orange, black, and cream markings at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. I was glad it paused long enough on this blade of grass to give me such a clean look at those beautiful wing patterns.

This American Green Tree Frog was tucked into the vegetation at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. Another small piece of wildlife that makes an early morning walk at the refuge worthwhile.

This Beaver gave me quite the look while I photographed it at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. Those bright orange teeth really stand out when you get a good head-on view.

I really like the color showing on this House Finch while it is going through its molt. The mix of red, gray, brown, and fresh-looking feathers gives it a completely different look.

I wasn’t expecting to see these two hogs wandering through my neighborhood here in Lavaca, Arkansas.

A Green Tree Frog had its eye on a mosquito. In the first photo, the frog is clearly zeroed in on the mosquito. A split second later, its tongue shot out. I have no idea if it actually caught the mosquito, but judging by the second photo, it looks like the mosquito may have escaped.

There’s something about a Ruby-throated Hummingbird sitting quietly in the rain. Even on a wet morning, the hummingbirds are still busy around my yard.

Every morning, several cottontail rabbits wait near my deck for sunflower seeds. After they finished eating, a mouse I did not know was around crept out from under the deck. I watched it make two trips, taking one seed each time before returning under the deck.

Two weeks after leaving the birdhouse, these young Eastern Bluebirds are coming closer to my feeders. On August 13, I photographed an adult male feeding mealworms to one of the juveniles. The young Bluebirds have also started visiting the birdbath.

I found this Green Tree Frog clinging to the tall vegetation at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. These little frogs are always fun to find and photograph, especially when they pose this nicely.

I photographed this Five-lined Skink at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. Its tail looks like it has been lost at some point and is now growing back. Skinks and other lizards have an amazing ability to regenerate part of a lost tail.

This photo gives a good sense of just how small this Gray Tree Frog was. With a dragonfly perched just above it, the size comparison really stands out. I photographed this little scene at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma.

This Gray Tree Frog picked a perfect little resting spot at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. With that green coloring, it blends into its surroundings pretty well until you notice those eyes looking back at you.

This Gray Tree Frog found a pretty good hiding spot among the green leaves at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. I almost missed it until that little face peeked out from between the leaves.

I went to Mount Nebo State Park to photograph deer, but these American Crows gave me a welcome change of subject. They searched the grass for several minutes, and I photographed this one with what looks like a small caterpillar or larva in its beak.

I thought this White-tailed Doe was about to stick her head right through my open truck window! She came in incredibly close and gave me quite the look. If you look closely at her eyes, you can even see the reflection of my truck.

I noticed a small growth below this White-tailed Buck’s eye at Mount Nebo State Park in Arkansas, so I took a close-up photo. It appears consistent with a cutaneous fibroma, commonly called a deer wart.

One last meal before leaving the nest. I photographed this young Eastern Bluebird waiting at the entrance as a parent arrived with food. Just a few hours later, the baby bluebird fledged and began life outside the birdhouse.

I waited almost an hour at Mount Nebo State Park for these three White-tailed Fawns to stand together. Later that morning, the doe came out of the trees with all three beside her.

Before the two young Eastern Bluebirds fledged, the male stayed busy keeping the birdhouse clean. In this video, he removes a fecal sac after feeding the chicks.

Talk about being in the right place at the right time. I stepped onto my deck and saw a young Eastern Bluebird partly out of the birdhouse. I hurried inside for my camera, and within seconds, it flew from the nest. A few minutes later, the second chick appeared and leaped from the entrance.

The young Eastern Bluebirds in my birdhouse are growing fast. In this video, the female arrives with food, and it looks like two chicks are waiting inside. They appear almost ready to leave the nest. It should not be long before I see these young bluebirds taking their first flights around my yard.
