Did Anthropic’s A.I. Really Make a Scientific Discovery on Its Own? (Gift Article)
An expert at the University of Copenhagen said his team had been sharing its research with the company’s A.I. model, Claude, and that its new finding matched their work.

As a Florida alum of the Tebow era it pains me deeply to agree. But that's really just because I maintain a deep suspicion of prosperity gospel evangelicals writ large. Always feels like a ticking clock before they use the moral authority of faith to exploit desperate Christians for self-enrichment.

"We have a mandate from the American people to do evil things and take lifelines away from the American people and people around the world. You can tell people love and support this by how much money we cut from aid and reallocate to keeping ourselves safe from the American people, who love us."

"Woke 1 was crazy" has become a meme in certain corners, but during about the same period, the right built an entire social media ecosystem dedicated to convincing women being in a fundamentally abusive marriage was natural and desirable to mainstream implied opposition to the 19th Amendment.

What happens when a trad influencer leaves her husband, questions her beliefs, stops selling anti-feminism T-shirts — and still needs to make a living online?

I agree with all of this and would only add that, in my experience, the people who discount university life in preference for industry job training are people who entered college without meaningful exposure to jobs and went straight into an office job from college.

Perfectly timed response to WB merger likely going through, lol. Anyway, get your libraries to sign up for Kanopy. And set up Plex servers. And get a DVD player and rent DVDs from the library. Just a reminder of the alternatives to streaming.

One more example of how a personalist regime they cannot conceive of a bipartisan institution to the point they would prefer to destroy it if they cannot repurpose it to their ends. See, also, much of the rest of the federal government, our military, science, higher education etc.

Some universities, like mine, have adopted an "it's up to the instructor to set AI policy for their class" approach to AI. I think folks have underappreciated the extent to which that's basically a race-to-the-bottom in AI permissiveness. Consider sequenced classes.

I can't wait for the effective altruist take's final form: "it should be okay for me to get a tax write off for donating to a nonprofit fund that just pays me the money back because in the long-run, my impact on humanity will be so great that it's altruistic for me to keep all the money."

Boycott X? Brother, this guy's companies & wealth are basically entirely dependent on government contracts. The next Democratic administration should be DOGE-ing those contracts into the sun on day one and nationalizing the national security-related enterprises (SpaceX & Tesla batteries, basically)

This whole episode is, to me, the quiet crisis for centralized AI like this. Eventually firms will realize that having a potential competitor hoovering up your corporate secrets through inference from employees' use of their products is...not great. Governments too.

When the MCU started, if Donald Trump was president in the MCU, it would have seemed too outlandish even for a comic book film. In fact, this would have still been true when Winter Soldier made his first MCU appearance.

Four observations: 1. Plagiarism is a career ending offense. 2. Many faculty have quickly adopted AI in their research and writing workflows. 3. When drawing on niche training data, even powerful LLMs repeat exact text from the data without citation. 4. The academy is rich in petty vendettas.

My contribution to the speed camera discourse is just to remind everyone, like we did with congestion pricing, that people with very low incomes are less likely to drive and disproportionately more likely to suffer speeding and dangerous driving through their neighborhoods. Speed cameras are good.

I think academia is no different from most other professional jobs in that the industry has been dining on the image built in the 60s and 70s when most positions were stable with competitive salaries and benefits. You know, conditions that haven't been true for 40 years.

This whole thing is not about the merits of the claims but a fear spreading tactic to demonstrate that the guardrails on their claims of absolute power are gone and they can come down on anyone they want with the full force of the federal government without reason or provocation.

Graduate school. My graduate school experience was incredible and left me with both intellectual growth, lifelong friends, and a fulfilling career. However, for most people, a doctorate is a miserable time with dismal and worsening career prospects (and less fulfillment) in the academy.

The death of the U.S. hegemony coming via a life-long scam artist famed for self-indulgence being elected at the twilight of his cognitive faculties on a kayfabe pitch to an aging society's discomfort with non-white immigrants realizing that he can pocket the sale returns is a bit on the nose.

I'm not anti-AI, and I literally would not notice anything in my personal work if AI chatbots/word producers were banned today. In fact, in my broader work, it would be an improvement as I wouldn't have to grade AI generated student work that serves no meaningful learning function.
