Nothing more perfectly sums up the institutionalization Of revolution more than French riot cops attacking French youth in a place they’ve been taught to celebrate revolution for their entire school career.

French law : once police have issued warnings to disperse, you are in effect a criminal if you linger, and are treated like vermin. This is actually the "fun" part for CRS (crowd control), brutalising "leftists".

This is NOT crowd control. Firing tear gas into a dense crowd with most exits blocked.

Tensions are rising at Place de la Bastille, where police have begun issuing warnings to disperse. They have also blocked most of the exits from the Place de la Bastille.

This is what police are kettling. Only two exits, including a very small one (rue de la Roquette). Seeing some tweets about tears gas now. This can go very very wrong.

This isn’t looking good. Police have completely surrounded a packed Place de la Bastille. There may be two authorised exits, but the crowd is so dense people can’t reach them. They’re now chanting to be let out.

During today’s protest in Rennes (Brittany), 8th of October, a student lost part of his finger. His hand was resting on a wire fence when police charged. This shows how brutal police charges can be. When protecting yourself is also verboten, you have no choice but to be left exposed to the violence.

People underestimate how life-changing these protests are for young people in France. Assas still has a powerful far-right contingent, but resistance to it has taken root.

A gentle reminder that Macron’s government claimed yesterday that student protests were dying down. A claim that highlights just how disconnected they and their advisers are from the lived realities of young people in France. 🙃

Looking at different videos of police confiscating protests signs, it seems to me that the signs that are confiscated all point towards police brutality. It is now officially verboten to not only protect oneself from arbitrary police repression, but also to call it out.

State censorship’s little dilemma: In the above video you see that police approved - and chuckled over - a protest sign saying “Macron, fuck your teacher, not ours.” (referring to Brigitte Macron). Now we learn that Macron is furious it appeared on public service TV without Channel 2 apologising.

Far-right pundits are complaining about spelling mistakes on protest signs. The mistakes are deliberate: they highlight the shortage of teachers and resources in public schools. Irony is indeed dead.

Twenty years ago, the journalist was murdered at the instigation of Russian security services.
