On this day in 1961, Cuba declared itself free of illiteracy, following the 'Year of Education' when more than 200,000 Cubans volunteered in literacy brigades. Over 700,000 Cubans learned to read and write and Cuba's literacy rate was 96%, one of the highest in the world.

On 23 September 2024, Israel launched an intensive aerial bombardment on Lebanon, heavily targeting Dahiyeh in southern Beirut where entire apartment blocks were destroyed. Despite a ceasefire on 27 November, Israeli strikes on Lebanon are happening on a near daily basis.

This weekend is the 43rd anniversary of the Sabra / Shatila Massacre when 2,000-3,500 Palestinian refugees and Lebanese civilians were murdered by the Phalange, a right-wing militia operating in co-ordination with the Israeli army. This cemetery in Shatila remembers the dead.
