I'm years late with a storm log, but if you're interested in revisiting the May 20th, 2019 High Risk Mangum tornado, have a look. Lots of previously-unreleased photos and a (too long) write up about our chase that day. www.wxlog.com/events/may20...

June 20, 2026 south of Pine Bluff, WY: Sometimes you set up what you think will be a very cool timelapse but Mother Nature has a cruel sense of humor.

Can't believe this was 5 years ago already. Biggest blunder of my chase career could have ended it all.

First chase video in ages and I use it to throw a temper tantrum of this magnitude? SHOTS FIRED. SUCH DRAMA. Maybe it's just the SDS talking, but this video is gonna say some things that can't be taken back... :)

www.wxlog.com/events/may17... - check it out if you'd like to see a bunch of unpublished McCook, NE 2019 tornado photos or read a bunch of words about that chase. I try to make my logs as cozy as possible. And yes I am still this far behind!

I woke up at 230 in the morning and got in a flying metal tube all to look at this cloud in North Dakota.

So much 2025 chase material to sort through -- been a really fun season. Here's a small spout near Ragland, NM today.

Topaz did its best to save this lapse from the oblivion of a bumped focus ring. Here's the awesome (confusing) genesis of the anticyclonic tornado near South Plains, TX on April 24, 2025. Never seen anything quite like this before.

First one to spot the tornado in this photo wins. THIS IS WHY WE CHASE!!! From east of Roswell, NM yesterday.

So nice to be out on the plains chasing again. I think yesterday was the most successful first-chase-of-the-year we've ever had.

Finally finished compiling all our storm log data from the 2018 season (comically behind, I know). Of the 11 days we chased, we only saw one brief tornado on May 2. Of the 47.1 hours we were in "chase mode" only 174 seconds of those were spent seeing a tornado. That's 0.103%!!!

A weird thing about #nmwx storm chasing is the perpetual proximity to history. On our June 3, 2018 bust, we just so happened to stop for a final look at the departing MCS near the Trinity site. Added here is the mushroom cloud's rough size / location. The juxtaposition of scales blows my mind.

If you ever feel bad about falling behind on projects -- don't. I'm still writing storm logs for chases seven years ago. Case in point: www.wxlog.com/events/may19... BTW, if anyone has a more nuanced explanation for why storms were so uncooperative and transient on May 19, 2018, I'm all ears!

My favorite movies of 2024. Maybe a bit weaker year all in all, but there were plenty of movies that made picking a top 5 REALLY hard. Hated to leave out Dune Pt. 2, Furiosa, Anora, Inside Out 2, His Three Daughters, and Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World

If this tornado picture were 60 feet wide and 40 feet tall and you stood right in front of it, it still wouldn't take up as much of your vision as it did in real life. You can't sum up a supercell in a picture.
a tornado over open prairie, with a 60,000 foot tall, deep blue colored updraft and downdraft above it

Sterling City, TX (May 17, 2021) was one of those days where we doggedly stuck to the same forecast and storm, and it finally paid off with a perfect show. Plenty of counterexamples to that strategy over the years, but when it happens, its really feels special.

A late season "transitional" trough is racing across the plains, and should produce some tornadoes tomorrow. But they aren't likely to be this kind - well structured, surrounded by dry air, slow moving, and easy to see. Can't wait for more of these.

If Wray is my favorite stationary timelapse, then McCook is probably my favorite moving timelapse. In real time as we crested the hill and got the reveal of that churning debris cloud... might have been a tear... or maybe it was just dusty in the car.

If we ever top the Wray, Colorado intercept I will count myself one of the luckiest people on earth. The roar was like a Learjet engine, and the preceding calm followed by the sudden 70mph RFD was the most thrilling thing I've ever stood in.

Another unpublished 2024 lapse - this time a heartbreaker. This is what I was filming instead of blasting south to El Dorado. Even if we'd left halfway through this lapse we could have still made it. Ugh what could have been.

As a first bsky post, here's some unpublished 2024 timelapse. This beast rumbled lazily across the NW Oklahoma countryside, letting us get too cozy in its inflow notch. Just before the Custer City tornado, it quickly lunged forward with spiraling RFD curtains that engulfed us as we tried to escape.
