Petronella Boogaart has been reading a VERY good book and wants to immortalize its pleasure in her portrait. What a wonderful idea! And Jan Verkolje obliges, in 1679. #booksky

A federal judge on Monday struck down key parts of an Arkansas law that would have allowed criminal charges against librarians and booksellers for providing “harmful” materials to minors, calling it unconstitutional. Take that, Upchuck Hucklefuck. #Sheshed

Truly abhorrent. I don’t know what is actionable at this point.

back when, if you wanted to rewatch a show on tv, you had to literally record it via tape. technically illegal! but we understood: just bc it's being distributed publicly didn't mean you owned it or the data. YOU DON'T OWN REPRODUCTIONS YOU DON'T HOLD THE RIGHTS TOO. Same rules apply, AI. Get fked!

Nick Cutter has a real talent for mixing horror with genuine emotion. The Queen is both disgusting and delightful. If you're looking for a coming-of-age story with a Cronenberg vibe, this one’s a solid 10 out of 10.

Book cover for “The Queen” by Nick Cutter features a close-up of a woman’s face with a wasp on her cheek, set against a red and black background a distressed appearance.

Remote work and perceived vs. actual productivity www.forbes.com/sites/glebts...

Article excerpt reads: “49% of managers of hybrid workers struggle to trust their employees to do their best work. This lack of trust in worker productivity has led to what Microsoft researchers termed productivity paranoia: “where leaders fear that lost productivity is due to employees not working, even though hours worked, number of meetings, and other activity metrics have increased.”

Article excerpt reads: “That shouldn’t be surprising. A major benefit from remote work comes from doing away with the daily commute. Workers on average devote approximately 35% of their saved time from not commuting to their primary job, according to research at the University of Chicago. Given that people spend an average of nearly an hour per day on commute travel alone, and additional time on other commute-related tasks, this adds up to substantial additional time worked.”

Article excerpt reads: “Another benefit stems from greater flexibility to do work tasks at times that work for us. We know from research that all of us have different levels of energy throughout the day when we are best suited for various activities that don’t necessarily match the typical rhythms of a 9-5 schedule. By doing specific work tasks at various times, we can get more done.”

Article excerpt reads: “And more recent research showed that remote work productivity actually increased throughout the pandemic. Stanford University researchers doing a longitudinal study comparing productivity at different time periods found that remote workers were 5% more efficient than office-based ones in the summer of 2020. But this number improved to 9% by summer 2022. Why? Because all of us learned how to be better at remote work.”

I’m a sucker for themed drinks, especially when it’s for one of my favorite animated series. Boba Bear is teaming up with Riot Games to celebrate Arcane Season 2 and turning their Ktown spot into the Last Drop Bar. Very tempted to get a vial…what are the side effects of Shimmer again?

Bingo night! Carl Leffler helped increase the number of combinations in bingo cards. By 1930, Leffler had invented 6,000 different bingo cards. For my lovely nerds: P1=C(50,4)/C(75,4)=0.189477

If you enjoy 2120, check out Wylesol’s Internet Crusader. The story is told from the perspective of a computer desktop, a teen spends their free time chatting, gaming, & browsing shady sites—until creepy pop-up ads, & viruses try to pull him into a Satanic cult. Surreal horror & 90s nostalgia.
