Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 22/08/2026This is the largest bush tomato plant here! It’s likely to be Orangeto a blight resistant orange F1 hybrid. Whatever it is, it’s happy there. I’m growing over 70 varieties of tomato here, mostly heritage/open pollinated plus a few F1s for specific qualities such as blight resistance. 150
Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 01/08/2026Brassicas as you know are a superb crop for over-wintering in the UK. I really would not want to put anyone off growing such a versatile nutritious veg family. For sure best not to grow them in the same spot year on year. I should think we're all doing the best we can to grow food in our plots 000
Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 01/08/2026Sadly slugs like these. I've had snails suck the juice out of onions like vampires! Key thing is to see where they are living, reduce potential slug habitat where you're growing veg & encourage predators such as black beetles 110
Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 01/08/2026It's just a list of what can be sown now, Tony. I am trying to be helpful, explaining what can be grown in the UK from sowings in August. Loads of people have lost their veggies due to the heat wave, there is a cost of living crisis, food prices are set to rise again this autumn I'm not a scientist! 100
Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 01/08/2026Unlikely to affect one's nutrient content as much as not growing and eating them though... If it worries you, don't do it then. Today I am planting out more brassicas, and will be interplanting them too. I don't buy supplements. Can't afford them even if I wanted to! 100
Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 01/08/2026I am working Tony, I don't have the time to research where the scientific papers might be. The life of a freelancer who has to single handedly pay all of the bills, during a time when prices are increasing and wages stagnant = almost never having a weekend! But will ask son when he is next here 000
Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 01/08/2026I would need to have peer reviewed docs explaining this - which I would then send to my son who is doing a PhD in mycology for clarification. Observing how plants have grown in plots for many years, I haven't seen any detrimental consequences of growing brassicas, including intercropping. 000
Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 31/07/2026🧅 Autumn sown onions are best sown around 18th August (weather, holidays, work permitting) 🐛 Protect new sowings of brassicas from caterpillars 010

Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 03/02/2026Thank you, I do enjoy writing by hand. I think PNW has colder winters & warmer, drier summers but it's such a huge area that I expect it varies quite a bit! 010
Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 01/02/2026There is no rush, and most people don't have the warm, frost free, and light under cover space to keep faster growing plants healthy until May (or even later for those further north). 020
Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 01/02/2026 in particular how you can keep more tender plants (ie: not frost hardy) warm and healthy until later on in the spring. Stephanie Hafferty @stephaniehafferty.bsky.social · 01/02/2026Around the middle of the month, daylight passes 10 hours a day, and gradually increases every day until the summer solstice in June.
