“Poor or rich, Adrestians love their musical performances.” Yuri placed a hand on his heart and closed his eyes, adopting a look of wistfulness. “I can imagine it now—the Mystical Songstress herself, travelling the lands, singing for all who will listen a love story for the ages. Of the Blessed Queen of Fodlan finding a prince once thought lost, and tenderly nursing him back to health…”

“Flayn was the one who healed him,” Byleth stated bluntly. She tried not to think about the funds she’d diverted from the Mittelfrank Opera just last month, or Dorothea’s coldly sympathetic letter in response.

Yuri waved his hand with an air of nonchalance. “The details aren’t important, friend. What matters is that it makes a good story. And besides, there’s a grain of truth in there!”

“Happy birthday, kid. Here, got this for you.”

Jeralt felt rather pleased with himself as he handed Byleth a hefty book. The damn thing had cost an arm and a leg, but any price was worth seeing his daughter’s eyes light up, a rare smile on her lips. He still wasn’t sure what to make of her sudden passion for Fodlan’s history, but he wasn’t complaining. Ever since they’d joined the kingdom army and she’d started making friends with kids her age, Byleth had blossomed in a way he’d once thought impossible.

“Thanks,” she said, the simple word belied by how tightly she clutched the book to her chest.

“Glad you like it, kid. Anyway, I—”

Jeralt paused, his eye catching on an unexpected flash of blue. There was a brooch he’d never seen before pinned to Byleth’s cloak. When he leaned in for a closer look, he nearly choked. What he’d assumed to be glass was in a reality a massive sapphire surrounded by delicate silver filigree, that was definitely worth more than the average soldier made in a year.

And in the centre was engraved the Crest of Goddamned Blaiddyd.

Well, if there’d ever been any question that it came from someone other than that mooning royal brat, there was none now.

“That’s a, uh. Nice brooch you’ve got there,” Jeralt said carefully. He could already feel a headache forming.

Byleth touched the sapphire gently. “Birthday gift.”

Jeralt wanted to scoff at the king’s audacity. Birthday gift? As if. He knew a betrothal gift when he saw one.

But before he could figure out a way to explain things to the kid, Byleth began to smile. Not the slight smile she’d offered him, but a grin, wide enough that her eyes crinkled up. And was…was she blushing?!

Jeralt could only stare. She’d never looked more like Sitri.

“Uh. Right.” Jeralt coughed into his hand to hide the sudden prickling of tears. He needed to focus on present matters, such as the king of Faerghus angling for his baby girl’s hand in marriage. Or worse, that she might actually accept.

Jeralt pressed a hand to his now aching forehead, ignoring Byleth’s curious head tilt. Great. Just great.

Well, he consoled himself. If things went south, at least they’d be able to buy a new life in Albinea with that stupid rock…

If it were up to Byleth, the wedding would be a simple ceremony with a handful of witnesses.

However, she’d been queen long enough to know the value of appearances and displays. The day wasn’t about her. It was about projecting the power of her throne and celebrating the stability and future of her new kingdom. Every pointless detail was in reality a symbol, a secret message that the nobility would read and analyze.

It wouldn’t have been as bad if her advisors could plan the wedding while she focused on other issues. But for the past few weeks, Byleth had been badgered for her opinion at every turn, preventing her from accomplishing any meaningful work.

“All right, all right. No need to look at me like that, friend,” Yuri said with a laugh. “This marriage talk is really getting to you, huh?”

Byleth hesitated. A queen should keep such selfish thoughts to herself, but Yuri always had been better at reading her blank face than most. “It’s a waste of time and gold,” she finally admitted. “I can’t wait until this wedding is over.”

“Hm. Yes,” Yuri nodded thoughtfully. “Eager to get to the good part. I can see why, considering how handsome your future consort is.” Mischief glittered in his eyes. “And you know what they say about Blaiddyds—it’s not just their hands that are big…”

During the night, Annette is restless. She has an high fever due a small amount of poison still in her body.
She toss and turn but she doesn't want to ask any help.
However there is a certain person she'd love to see at her side.

Annette (monologue):
I got shot by a poisened arrow during last battle.

Told to both Mercie and the Pofessor it wasn't a big deal.

I removed the poison swiftly. I'm a big girl and I won't complain.

I know you can't be here... You will come back in a couple of days.

Close up on Annette expressions, still feverish, suddendly she seems more relaxed and a little bit ecstatic.
With a dazed vision, she belives that the man she see at her side (Felix) is just a feverish allucination.

Annette (monologue):
So... Am I being selfish if I want you to be here?
Aaaaah must be the fever.

We know see her POV.

There is Felix who is laying by her side on the ground, he is dirty like he travelled with a horse for days withouth taking a break.
He seems sad to see her in pain.

He doesn't utter a word, just blushes slightly, illuminated by the moonlight when she looks at him.

Annette (monologue):
You can't be here.
But alas it was a good dream.

Her mind still doesn't belives that any of that can be true and she softly touch his lips with her finger.
We jump a little forward in time and we see Ann's expression more relaxed.
Her "dream" had a soothing effect on her and the fever broke.
Near her bed there is now a golden music box with an open letter where is written:

"A gift for you which I didn't buy because it made me think of you.
Absolutely not.
But there wasn't any book on "Folk Tales of Samp Beasts" in the jewelry
(Felix tried to cross the word but now the cat is out of the bag)
oddities shop so...

(signed) F.F."

In the meantime thre are two men are discussing near her tent:

Felix - Last night Ashe. -

A place to disappear, more like.
He dared to ask a question that had been burning on his tongue for days. "Then why do you stay here, Byleth? Surely it would be better to live somewhere more lively, with transport and medical services, and enough restaurants that you'd never had to eat the same meal twice."
That got a chuckle, at least, but she shook her head sadly. "This is where I belong. It's better for everyone."
"Not for me," he blurted out. "I'd happily return to Fhirdiad if you went with me."
What kind of an offer was that? Asking a woman to leave everything she'd ever known just to come and fill up his empty life?
And yet, benevolent goddess that she was, she only laughed. He didn't know what was so funny, but as long as she smiled like that at him, he was happy to be the butt of the joke.
"Return to the Kingdom with you, eh?" She looped her arm through his and snuggled close despite the warm night. With her head on his shoulder, their faces were close enough to kiss, if he were a bolder man. "I appreciate that invitation more than you know. But for now, how about helping me return to my room?"

Summary:
The prince attempted a risky lunge, leaving his right side completely exposed. Jeralt knew immediately what was about to happen but was powerless to stop it. Rather than block the blow, Byleth stepped inside Dimitri’s reach once he’d passed the point where he might have stopped his momentum.

And then, just as her father had taught her, she punched the future king of Faerghus square in the face. Dimitri staggered backwards a step, where Byleth’s leg waited to trip him. His back hit the dirt hard.

Back at the monastery he'd tried so hard to avoid, Jeralt has feelings about the life he forced his daughter into.
