And dialogue aside, man is one of *the* undersung prose stylists of the 20th century

74. Carpenter's Gothic / William Gaddis It's got nothing on the Recognitions or JR ,and the bite of its misanthropy is largely defanged by the 80s being a less advanced awful than today - but it's Gaddis, and there's no one like him. I don't get how he uses dialogue as pure velocity, it's magic

73. The Melancholy of Resistance / Laszlo Krazanhorkai Something happens to time when reading this one, it's like treacle. Fucked up European village, everyone's a lunatic or a bastard, there's a whale, etc. A dozen pages at a time dedicated to a thought that flickers into crisis into etc. 💯

72. Strange Hotel / Eimear McBride Failed to read two years ago, before I knew McBride was the kind of author each of whose books teaches you to hear the voice of the next. And, there now, I recognise in the rhythm of this one the displacements of age that I am just beginning to register in myself

Just saw in 35mm for the first time since I became a woman whose inescapably strong feelings have made her go psychotic before and Kidman in this is a lot of what I would think can't exist in film. All in the behind the eyes, the shaking of it apart but, of course, keeping it together. Delightful!

71. Which As You Know Means Violence / Philippa Snow The sheer excitement of discovering this book exists carried me through the read, but unfortunately as a collection of essays it's pretty limp + redundant. Little you couldn't unravel yrself in an afternoon of spelunking on Wikipedia

Went to the vampire goth music play party w the Russian domme saw over the course of the night a roving group of beautiful succubuses use random men as chairs & footstools whilst we chatted shortly getting as many needles as possible put in me balance has been restored

How the fuck is this real why does the world continue to radiate such delight and surprise and beauty every time I ready to myself to let go and loosen my grasp and slam myself apart at the cliffbase something like this comes along Jeff Mills / Buster Keston never killyourself

70. The Disappearers / Marlon James Not nearly as formally innovative as has been made out, but this is mostly because it sets its form to sucker punching you w the agony it thinks you deserve to feel. Anger as an end to itself, and knowing the leading edge of that rage made it an excruciating read

Rare book find of the week btw was getting to see the so-called 'Wicked Bible' of 1631, released w a misprint (see line 14 (lmao)) that landed its printer in debtor's jail

They invented a film where the guy who made Irma Vep and Demon Lover and Personal Shopper has Kristen Stewart and Juliette Binoche hang out on together in every scene never kill yourself

69. Close to the Knives / David Wojnarowicz Actually too painful to render or critically reconstruct post facto - if you are queer + believe in the urgency of life through yr queerness you need to read this

TincturedCanoid @stellarinvolute.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
68. A Balthus Notebook / Guy Davenport I mean to be clear you do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to Balthus. But if you did, and if I was going to read it, it would be by Guy Davenport

67. Worsted / Garielle Lutz Up there w Schutt as the most talented sentence writer working today - every single one is like a distinct and differently formed little bug crawling away from yr eye as it roves the page. So, so, so weird

65. Wrong / Dennis Cooper Largely offcuts & experiments around the Myles cycle, & I think Cooper's fascinations suffer w/out the accompanying emotional reservoir those novels build a dam around

64. Jazz / Toni Morrison A novel whose biggest weakness is its impossibility of ever quite living up to its (perfect) opening page. Unsure it ever quite succeeds in its experiment w its first person narratorial overseer, but, then again, that voice knows it can never measure up to the people inside

63. The Bluest Eye / Toni Morrison Morrison's first novel, and about as close to the bone as you can get. Cruelty is everywhere, but her gaze never treats it w anything but curiosity; judgement and sorrow are correct, but they are easy, and do little to untangle the world from what it is

Never piss off a fag like Gary Indiana he will write multiple novels featuring thinly veiled character assassinations of you and conduct interviews w yr biographer years after yr death to discuss what a massive bitch you were www.interviewmagazine.com/culture/gary...

62. The End of the Story / Lydia Davis So brilliantly renders the near-psychotic uncertainty and projection and rebound of a passionate relationship drying at the source and evaporating from your life and reshaping everything in its wake that I was only able really to read it in relation to myself

60. Ice / Anna Kavan In the bio at the front it says that Kavan got addicted to heroin because her tennis coach said it would 'improve her game' and I really feel like this is the kind of book that someone who got hooked on dope by their tennis coach could have written (positive)

58. Last Evenings on Earth / Roberto Bolano Very difficult to grasp what connects each event or sentence to another in these short stories, but it is the action of the connection, or the blunt/violent disarray of the characters' confusion at it, that drives them forwards. Will read more

57. The Future In Our Past / Callum Cant & Matthew Lee Book club read, interesting + informative but has that classic leftist book issue of trying to rise up against its own driness + intertness. Suffered read so soon after Berger's A Seventh Man, which threads that needle better in every way

TincturedCanoid @stellarinvolute.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
56. 10:04 / Ben Lerner Lerner continues to do his thing, pushed even harder to the edge of reflexive self-regard. Something about this one didn't quite come together for me, but it still fees like a gambit elegantly and sincerely played, and it's impossible not to be excited by what his voice does
