What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now
As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

One of the funniest things about these consumer AI agents is that lots of people spend their entire careers trying to avoid having to manage any other employees, and yet "you get to manage your own coterie of incompetent employees!" is somehow the sales pitch they decided on for these things

But I just did what nearly all writing about the issue does: talked about the percent of women on campus who will become victims without talking about the percent of men on campus who will become perpetrators. Most campus rape victims know their assailants.
1 in 8 students experiences sexual violence during college.
The 2019 Campus Climate Survey found that 13% of undergraduate students experienced rape or sexual assault after enrolling in college.

That’s about:

• 1 in 4 undergrad women (26%)

• 1 in 14 undergrad men (7%)

who experienced nonconsensual sexual contact by physical force or inability to consent since enrolling at their school.

Please remember that RAY GUNN by Brad Bird is a Skydance Animation project in large part because Brad still wanted to work with serial sexual harasser of women John Lasseter after he was forced to leave Pixar after the serial sexual harassment. John was then hired at Skydance by David Ellison. So.

it’s absolutely fucked that people are elevating these effective altruist freaks and falling for their rhetoric on AI. media is letting these people set the narrative, while those of us following EA/longtermist circles for years know how insane they are. they consistently downplay climate risk.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

Most true-to-life thing about Widow's Bay so far is how an NYT reporter was put into an obviously sinister and complicated place full of secrets that begged further investigation so of course they wrote a puff piece promoting it

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

How will something like this be allowed in states that have two-party consent laws on recording private convos? I know they claim "recording" isn't what's happening here and audio files won't be accessible, but what about the "high-level summaries" of conversations generated as they're happening?
