I thought, I had broken the iteration-time foldout of ReBenchDB. Turns out, it was just terribly slow. Scanning through a 2GB data table on a slow disk takes a while. Fix the primary key order, i.e., the relevant index, and instead of waiting 42sec, it shows in 34ms.
Screenshot of ReBenchDB's iteration time foldout, showing detailed data for the benchmark in addition to the short-form summary.

VMIL'26 has a program! Looks very interesting. Static Analysis, optimizing Android's GC, understanding R's benchmarks, optimizing Ruby, and lots more! The SPLASH early registration deadline is September 3rd! Program: conf.researchr.org/home/splash-...

Christoph shows how to reduce the size of @graalvm.org native images. We can get pretty far with fairly basic heuristics. Basic, means cheap during compilation. 2026.ecoop.org/details/mplr...

Can we use meta-compilation to ahead-of-time compile dynamic language programs from an interpreter? Maybe! Christoph talked about the approach he will try out. 2026.ecoop.org/details/ICOO...

Might have won something. Instead of 10h with @deutschebahn.com, they want me to travel 20h with them... Enjoying 10 trains and busses, instead of 3... Got rebooked "automatically" it seems. Thanks AI!

At this point, the expectations from the students to get recordings is zero. Maybe it's a good thing. But, I won't be defeated by technology! Wish me luck 🙈

Another example of rankings being silly. Before: 4 After: 10 Yes scoped to my personal interest, but still. These "emery berger rankings" are silly.

Was looking at some older slides and found a claim that copying text around for a text editor is only practical for <256chars. It's Friday, let's see whether this is a "current" assessment, considering only the text, and none of the other things an editor does.
An old slide that shows a buffer manager for a text editor, using simple coping to handle inserts and deletes.

This year's DLS Most Notable Paper award goes to Compiling for Multi-language Task Migration by Marc Feeley The paper is motivated by the challenges of implementing continuations for an uncooperative environment, and worth a read! Congratulations to the author! www.iro.umontreal.ca/~feeley/pape...
The award with the following citation:

Recent years have seen a resurgent interest in the use and implementation of first-class control, especially in the form of delimited continuations via effect handlers. This paper is motivated by the challenges of implementing continuations for an uncooperative environment and the opportunities for code migration that the implementation affords. The paper recaps the design of the Gambit Virtual Machine for efficient continuations, and it provides evidence for the ongoing effectiveness of the design.
