Socktober? I don't like to do group knits, they give me anxiety. I just happen to be knitting socks right now because that's finally the next project on the list from my Sheep & Wool yarn. I kinda like the inside better, I may wear them inside-out. #showmeyourknits 🧶

I got these from IndiBlossom, one's mine and one is for the child, it makes me happy to look at them! She had a TON of very good things, can't wait to see her again. I hate to link to FB, but she doesn't seem to have any other functional web presence, so here you go: www.facebook.com/indiblossom/
Two brightly-colored stainless steel cups. One is tall with a green background, vibrant pink chrysanthemum, and orange bird. The other is a mug, with a pink background and similar pink flower. Both are by IndiBlossom, Anuradha Mehra.

I had a genius idea! I posted *one* picture of a quilt and immediately got hooked into quiltsky. I've been trying to get chickens back on my feed for months, to no avail. So here are some chickens from the fair, chickens which I love and would love to see more pictures of:

2 Fairs in 2 days is 2 much 4 me but I'm doing it anyway. We picked the hottest possible day for the State Fair, which was bad, but the crowds were small and we managed to have a lot of fun anyway. I love looking at the crafts entries, and the animals, and the giant veggibles.

Also, I figured out why it's called a shawl. Clearly meant for a chihuahua. (My dog is very patient with my nonsense.)

I did a smart! I was just about 5 rows short of a 22nd feather, but I thought that might happen so I put in a lifeline (blue wire) after the 21st, so it was an easy fix/finish. Also, I thought the lifeline looked kinda neat with the short rows, so I took a picture. #knitsky #FOFriday🧶

I love knitting in orange, I do it because seeing the yarn makes me happy, but I don't want to wear orange, so I was certain I didn't have any autumnal knits. Then I moved one shawl out of the way and remembered I have two that I wear all the time, I just forgot over Summer. #showmeyourknits 🧶

It might be the 70s in me but I love a philodendron, miss me with your newfangled pothos. My husband wanted a plant of his own, so I made this with things we had around the house (including a 3d printer). The cutting is from my desk plant which started the same size and is now bigger than me.

After that sweater I needed a quick win. I don't know why this is called a shawl, it's very clearly a scarf. Otherwise, it's very nice. Winding it, I realized this yarn wouldn't work for the pattern I had in mind, but I think it's perfect for this! ravel.me/pincha-shawl #knitting #knitsky 🧶

This display was impressive, and brought up a discussion of how display => art. Of course the glassblowing child immediately clocked the Joey Kirkpatrick pear at the top.

Rod Zeitler has preserved his status as an IA State Fair legend. For the last several years he has had an entry in each of the roughly 180 canning classes, and he typically wins a ribbon per class.
Zeitler grew up on a farm in rural IA, where he was a 4-H member and exhibited livestock at fairs. Years later, seeking to emulate his wife's success in winning fair ribbons for her weaving, he began entering canning competitions.
This display features more than 700 jars of Zeitler's home-canned pickles, relishes, sauces, vegetables, fruits, jellies, jams, preserves, and butters. The stepped arrangement recalls historical canning and horticultural exhibitions at state fairs.

There were a bunch of awesome quilts. I thought this temperature one was especially neat because I've seen it in knit and crochet a bunch, but never quilting before. The Medallion Quilt is just amazing, all the fabrics look so soft and good and I can see why it took 5 years.

Debra Wykert's quilt, which won first place at the 2023 Iowa State Fair, is a visual record of the daily high and low temperatures in Wykert's home city of Muscatine, Iowa, in 2022. Each patterned block represents a day. A legend matches each fabric color to a five-degree temperature range. The transition between cool and warm colors reflects the area's weather patterns and seasonal fluctuations.

machine-pieced wool suiting, serge, and gabardine
Bertha Neiden's Medallion Quilt took nearly five years to construct. Following the traditional pattern of a medallion quilt - a center motif framed by multiple borders - Neiden pieced approximately 10,200 triangles and squares to create a dynamic gradient effect. (The discoloration is the result of a flood in 1951.) In 1914, Medallion Quilt won a purple ribbon (first place) at the Nebraska State Fair.
Neiden was born in Gorodish, a small Jewish village in the Russian Empire, now Ukraine. At age twenty0one she immigrated to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she worked as a seamstress in a department store. The quilt fabrics could have been leftovers from her work or fabrics she brought from Europe.

Self-taught in applique techniques, Singer has received numerous awards for her work. She constructed this jacket from the ribbons she won at various Native American art markets and fairs since 1995 and photo transfers of herself and family members over the years.
