My first solo piece for @aasnova.org as a new AAS Media Fellow! As someone who has worked on pulsar timing in the past, I found this study really interesting—the authors used stellar *pulsation* timing to infer the existence of companions around massive A-type stars, including a possible exoplanet!

Absolutely brilliant piece by @abiawomosu.bsky.social. The depth of analysis, deconstruction of BS, organization of facts/dates, recognition of the under-appreciated work of @timnitgebru.blacksky.app & others -- all make this one worth reading at least twice. abiawomosu.substack.com/p/the-machin...

The Machine Alibi: Unpacking the Myth of Superintelligence
No, the agents didn’t go rogue — and superintelligence is only ‘super’ to those who coined the term.

NSF is touting a dozen new solicitations announced this week as evidence that basic research still rules. But that's not what's really going on. www.science.org/content/arti...

Last week, a team of scientists (including NSF NCAR, the National Solar Observatory & Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research) discovered Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, which might be a key reason magnetic energy builds up on the Sun, fueling solar flares and eruptions that can affect Earth.

Large scale human collaboration is as beautiful as the cosmos itself (Galaxy Zoo is a citizen science astronomy project where people classify galaxies, started in 2007 and still going!) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_... #astrosky
I can honestly say that Galaxy Zoo is the best thing I’ve ever done. . . . I don’t know quite what it is, but Galaxy Zoo does something to people. The contributions, both creative and academic, that people have made to the forum are as stunning as the sight of any spiral, and never fail to move me. —Alice Sheppard, volunteer Galaxy Zoo moderator

White House science policy captured headlines this week, with the announcement of awards for its flagship AI program, Congressional hearings, and a Vannevar Bush-esque report "Science: A New Golden Age." We fashioned the news into one big story—incl. key updates at NSF. Reported w/ Kaia Glickman:

We paddled the last segment of the Occoquan Reservoir and river today, finally completing the trail. In all our years of canoeing I have found the great blue herons to be the most tolerant and least likely to take flight as we pass by.

New: The National Science Foundation is preparing to claw back some $500 million in funds from some of its core science programs in physics, math, computer science, and engineering in order to fund a project from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

NSF plans cuts to core science programmes to fund White House initiative
A proposed clawback of already distributed research funds comes as the US agency’s budget is already squeezed and it struggling to clear a backlog of grant applications.

Wake up babe, new exoplanet classification system just dropped
Figure 3 from Hasegawa et al. 2026. Canonical and refined classification schemes of exoplanets. Key planet properties and relevant physical processes are summarized. In the canonical classification scheme, four types (super-Mercuries, super/sub-Earths, sub-giants and gas giants) are recovered as often used in the literature (Section 2.6). The refined classification scheme expands these types to eight in total due to evolution processes (Section 4.2): super-Mercuries, bare cores, collisionally sculpted cores, photoevaporated cores, collisionally sculpted sub-giants, photoevaporated sub-giants, vapor-rich sub-giants, and gas giants. Among them, massive bare cores, collisionally sculpted cores, photoevaporated cores, collisionally sculpted sub-giants, photoevaporated sub-giants, and vapor-rich sub-giants are potentially water-rich.

In a new study, measurements taken by research aircraft helped NSF NCAR scientists get a better view of how much carbon is taken up (or released) in various parts of the world. Notably, they found that forests in the tropics take up less carbon than Earth system models typically predict.
