I boke down every line to the song “Otherside" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and my interpretation of its meaning.

Otherside by Red Hot Chili Peppers is About Grief and Addiction
Every line in this brilliant song is filled with haunting subtext about the darker side of life.

R.L. Stine writes many Goosebumps books about summer camp. The reason for this seems to have been revealed in his autobiography, It Came From Ohio!: My Life As a Writer. I wrote about this, and briefly reviewed The Curse of Camp Cold Lake, Welcome to Camp Nightmare and The Horror at Camp Jellyjam.

My upcoming book, Truth Before Comfort: Confessions of a Comic Book Journalist, will have a chapter about ComicBooks for Kids and photos I recently took at the CB4K warehouse. I wrote about the warehouse on Substack and shared some photos that won't be in the book.

Guys, the movie Obsession is about both things. It’s about men not respecting bodily autonomy AND it’s about people who are toxic and possessive in relationships, despite not even liking their partner. Stories can have multiple themes and subtexts. You don’t have to pick just one.

I miss when the Kickstarter app sent notifications every single time I got a new backer. I understand how it can be annoying, even in a modest Kickstarter, but it was fine by me. Anyway, pre-order my latest book, “Truth Before Comfort: Confessions of a Comic Book Journalist,” on Kickstarter.

Also, Frankenstein won Best Costume Design and Best Makeup. If Sinners wins Best Picture , this will be a huge night for horror. Possibly the biggest in Oscar history.

I wrote about Red Scare propaganda, McCarthyism and the 9-page comic I Fell for a Commie, originally published in Love Secrets #32 in 1953. Propaganda isn’t necessarily about logic or emotion, but the same message being repeated over and over again from ostensibly different senders.
starvingauthor.substack.com
The Anti-communist Propaganda in Love Secrets #32 was Laughably Bad
The Cold War-era comic I Fell for a Commie didn't even try to convince you of its worldview and, ironically, made the opposite point.

You’re welcome, Nick! Thanks for illuminating the themes of that book that often get lost in adaptation. The ghost attached to the safe straining to help the mom in the doorway is an image that has stayed with me ever since I first read it!

A Christmas Carol, the original novel, was more radical than its adaptations may have led you to believe. Charles Dickens depicted Ebenezer Scrooge as not just a greedy man but part of a larger system of economic injustice. I wrote about this on Substack, also diving into the Muppets and Red Sonja.

At SNL I worked with artists who made the funniest, stupidest graphics in no time flat. Some of my biggest jokes would have been impossible without these geniuses building an insane image or finding the perfect real-life photo of a politician. Sucks that their work is being pushed aside for slop.

The second you put a fictional character above a real human being, YOU are the problem. Theres no ifs, buts or ands about it. Not happy with what you read, fair enough, critique of the work is fine. Threaten a real human being over it? YOU ARE ONCE AGAIN THE PROBLEM. See how that works?

Let’s IMAGINE you heard that millions of people in France wanted their Prime Minister dead. And the Prime Minister was posting epic memes online, “trolling” millions of his own citizens. Now imagine you’re a world leader who doesn’t have this issue at all. Do you respect him?
200
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
You: Millions of Trump’s own people want him dead. He spends his time going online, “trolling” like a 14 y.o., calling them idiots and making fun of them. Also, you: Other world leaders respect him and aren’t laughing at him. He’s actually MORE respected than other presidents without this problem.
100
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
There’s nothing to “explain”. You’re believing two completely contradictory things at the same time. It’s almost as if you’re in a cult
100
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
At least if the “ppl” you’re talking about are Americans, the very people she’d be representing as a world leader
100
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
Yes. Obviously
100
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
You think America is having a mental health crisis and millions of Trump’s own people are unstable fuckers who want him to dead. And other countries wouldn’t laugh at him for that?
110
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
You think millions of the people Trump is supposed to be leading are unstable fuckers. But other countries wouldn’t laugh at him for that?
210
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
If you believed millions of Americans wanted Trump dead, why would it matter if millions also supported him? Most world leaders don’t actually have that problem. Only those leading the most unstable countries. You say “millions of liberals” but to other countries this means “millions of Americans”
110
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
That’s not how that works. Every leader throughout history, even the most unpopular ones, has had a good number of supporters. Do you believe that no world leader had ever been laughed at by other world leaders before?
110
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
“The world isn’t laughing at Trump and Vance. Millions of his own people want them dead!” Do you not hear yourself?
110
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
The entire “joke” is just “haha, this makes millions of my own citizens mad,” right? Why wouldn’t world leaders laugh at Trump if he himself is laughing at millions of the people he’s representing?
110
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
So now he’s just making jokes? You said he was intentionally riling up millions of his own citizens because he think they’re idiots.
110
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
He’s going to another country to represent America. Right after going online to “troll” millions of his own citizens to entertain you because you think they’re idiots
100
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
You can’t be a good clown and a respected world leader. These are two very different job descriptions. Respected world leaders don’t “troll” their idiot citizens online.
110
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
You can’t have it both ways. Either Trump is respected around the globe or you’re literally proud of him being a clown.
110
Nick Ulanowski @starvingauthor.bsky.social · 19/10/2025
This is why the world is laughing at America. The Vice President of the United States thinks it’s appropriate to go on social media and “troll” American citizens he thinks are “idiots.” What a clown show.
