I don’t involve AI until I already know what I want. At that point, it mostly becomes a typing exercise, and the AI just helps me get there a little faster. How about you?

So my view is this: the AI model is like a get-out-of-jail-free card. If I don’t know the answer, I don’t have to go wandering through Stack Overflow hoping to find someone who does (or did).

Alibaba did a study [1] on using AI agents to maintain a codebase, and within less than a year, the codebase had become unmaintainable. I should write a book: "The Mythical Agent-Month." 1. arxiv.org/abs/2603.03823

I’m definitely not at the point some vibe coders seem to be at, w/ endless agents working concurrently. The code gets too messy too quickly. Having too many people work on the same codebase at once has never really worked well, so why would adding speed and taking time away make it better?

JetBrains AIR + Claude seems like it may end up being my favorite, mostly because it fits so well with IntelliJ IDEA. That said, it’s hard to beat the price of Goose/OpenCode + Ollama. (Ollama even lets you use “Claude Code” backed by Ollama models, which is pretty cool.)

yah you can set versions of JVM dependencies with SDKMAN when switching into directories. You can't set environment variables or run important setup code. You can't manage other kinds of packages like, say, ffmpeg with Mise, you can do all of this

I appreciate that. Oracle tells everyone the release day for weeks or months ahead of time Is there some way that you could teach me to handle the process? I’m happy to donate both cash and time to your amazing effort, in order to close this last little gap

Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
See? Now we’re back at square 1: sdkman (in theory) does ALL of this and that’s why it’s so useful :) Just slow to pickup releases

Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
Neat. How do I switch between them?
100
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
I think I need to investigate. does mise have openjdk java 27 ? and does it support the equivalent of .sdkmanrc?
100
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
I love sdkman but it's failing on this very important (to me) metric: can we capture the energy+marketing+enthusiasm on release day? Oracle pays scores of people to put together the release, do social media, do launch-day streams, and then its squandered b/c for folks using SDKMAN it doesnt exist
230
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
im happy to pay so that a) the integration is fixed b) someone (u, me, scores of folks from oracle, etc.) could login on to whatever systems are there on release day, upload a zip, and hit 'go live' or whatever the integration requires.
100
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
thanks. but time is only an issue when the automation's broken. i'm happy to pay to fix it. I think @hansolo.eu said something about the integration between the two - DISCO and SDKMAN - being broken and he'd revisit it when he got home from his travels.
100
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
ill donate $$ if that would help, but is the problem in SDKMAN or in Disco? there's some bug in the integration, I thought?
100
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
the main issue is that there's this infernal lag - days or weeks - between when a new package (like Java 27) appears and when I can install it w/ SDKMAN. 6/N
200
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
but since there can only be one JDK per operating system, how would I first uninstall or 'disable' the other ones? these are problems I dont have with sdkman. 5/N
200
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
theres a handy, orthogonal tool call direnv which has this cd-into-a-directory-and-activate-an-environment mechanism. its not tied to any tool or environment variables tho in theory I suppose I could use direnv and ports / home-brew and just have it install java versions using a package manager 4/N
100
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
if I type java --version in ~/code/ancient-crap, it'll show java 8. (and trigger my gag reflex) 4/N
200
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
this is because of the presence of .sdkmanrc which gets evaluated by the shell and ensures that, in that working directory, java is the one I want it to be. SDKMan can do that fro all sorts of other jvm dependencies too. kotlin, Gradle, maven, etc. 3/N
100
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
and I am working on all 3 in different times. with pipenv (python), nodenv (node), sdkman (jvm), javaenv (jvm), rbenv (ruby), uv (python), etc., its possible to simply `cd` into this directories and when I type java --version, the current version of java is the version I want. 2/N
100
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
so, imagine I have a java 8 project in ~/code/ancient-crap, a Liberica java 21 project in ~/code/old-and-busted and I have an openjdk java 27 project in ~/code/new-shiny, 1/N
100
Josh Long 🍃 @starbuxman.joshlong.com · 18/09/2026
me too :( its like uv, pipenv, rbenv, nodenv, etc. invaluable.
