I knew I had read an Isaac Bashevis Singer story where an old man ruminates about life's meaning, but I couldn't remember the title. Then I remembered I had heard Ed Asner reading it. Dug thru my stuff and found this from 1987! Singer's "Pigeons". I pulled out an old cassette player and voila!

Kurt was real. Ashbury was fake. He was super nice when I ran into him on the Upper East Side in the early 2000s and went over to introduce myself.

I second Todd's approach. I try to focus on the part I can control which is the work, not people's response to it and I keep this on my monitor as a reminder.
Two quotes about focusing on the writing and not people's response to it. One from the Bhagavad Gita, the other from Tao Te Ching.

Luther's "Anyone Who Had A Heart" has been running thru my head all morning and I'm reminded that best master classes are works that succeed on their own terms. Bachrach and David and Luther hold a masterclass with this song.

An infamous prison farm. A great river in flood. A mysterious religious colony. Through them all, 13-year- old Samuel searches for his father in a Father Quest of antiquity updated to early-20th c. Mississippi.
