Matt Ridley gave the inaugural "NIH Scientific Freedom Lecture Series" earlier today and I just wanted to run through some of the main claims he made - you'll be unsurprised to learn that almost all of them are false. Here's his summary slide - let's start there. 🧵👇

Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, it’s probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, I’m sorry and also welcome.

I could never figure out exactly why that alcoholic had it in for me, but a number of men tried to throttle my first few books at birth and were otherwise weird (as in vile). Part of why my memoir is called Recollections of My Nonexistence.

I still don't know what dogs make of human music. I know of Laurie Anderson and Yo-Yo Ma "concert for dogs" in 2010, but not how they got there. These dogs seem to like classical music and Tom Waits.

Michel Pastoureau, always so satisfyingly astute, argued that striped clothing went from being ‘bad’ in Medieval times to ‘good’ after the American and French revolutions. We still live in that tradition.

In the year 1000, emperor Otto III went to visit the tomb of Charlemagne. Two centuries after his death, his body had most likely decayed to not much. Otto trimmed Charles' nails and ordered a golden nose for his face. He also took one of his teeth, for good luck.

In the old days, the tomb of Alexander the Great was a site of pilgrimage. Caesar Augustus went there once. After a speech, "he viewed the body of Alexander and actually touched it, whereupon, it is said, a piece of the nose was broken off." [Cassius Dio, LI 16]

The "inverted nun" (the character nun: "נ", not a woman on a wimple upside down) is an unusual character found in two texts of the Hebrew Scriptures. It does not function as a letter, it is not part of a word and is never read aloud. It's just a written symbol. No-one knows for sure what it means.

Recording (sound, image, movement) was a 19th c. obession. _Optography_ is the process of fixing an image from the retina of an eye. Wilhelm Kühne managed to obtain an image from a rabbit's eye (1878), after what sounds like a fair deal of torture (and the sacrifice of the animal).

Perhaps cockers are so given to excess because they were raised among the nobility (van Dyck, The Three Eldest Children of Charles I).

De ver cómo come, creo que la cocker es como la cabina telefónica del Dr Who. Por fuera es una perrucha pequeña que no mata una mosca. Por dentro es mucho más grande. Como una leona, mínimo.
