#5. The Blackfriar’s Massacre. Wed 6/28/1978.
48 years ago today, five men were fatally shot during a robbery in the back office of the Blackfriar’s Pub, a restaurant and disco lounge on Summer St in downtown Boston. The incident remains Boston’s deadliest unsolved massacre. They were found around 4am by a janitor. The victims, from youngest to oldest, are Peter Meroth, aged 31, a pub manager in Boston; Freddy De La Vega, aged 34, a prolific New England cocaine dealer and trafficker; John (Jack) Kelly, aged 35, a news reporter who became a Boston mafia insider; Vincent Solmente, aged 35, the owner of Blackfriar’s and several other establishments; and Charles Magarian, aged 36, a backgammon enthusiast from North Andover.
Investigators would later allege that it was a drug deal between De La Vega and Solmonte that brought these men to this room. Four out of the five either had cocaine in their systems or had links to cocaine dealing. The fifth victim, Magarian, was seemingly there to play backgammon, and maybe observe some underworld business dealings.
Regardless of what brought them all to Blackfriar’s, the motive for the massacre was robbery. Meroth, Kelly, and Solmente were all shot with both a handgun and a shotgun. Magarian was shot twice with a handgun, and De La Vega was shot in the face with a shotgun. The medical examiner would later testify that he believed the victims died 12 hours before he examined them at 9:30am that morning, but that his estimate could be off by up to six hours. The victims were found on the floor around a safe. A weighing scale and traces of white powder (that tested positive for cocaine) were found in the room. Authorities determined that $36,500 in cash and three pounds of cocaine were stolen from the office.

A rushed prosecution and a falsified confession tape are part of why this case is still unsolved. Two men were indicted for the crime less than three weeks later, William Ierardi, 32, and Robert Italiano, 36, with a supposed confession taped by an informant being the smoking gun evidence. The tape, recorded in 25yo Robert Zachari’s car in July 1978, purportedly captured Italiano discussing his participation in the robbery and five murders. Another conversation between Italiano and a different informant, 35yo William Aver, this time unrecorded and had during a visit to the Charles St Jail, describes how the robbery was planned. During Italiano and Ierardi’s month-long murder trial in spring 1979, it would be proven that Italiano’s confession tape was falsified by Zachari. His friend, 25yo Ronald Cresta played the part of Italiano.
The basic story, according to these fake confessions, is that the idea for the robbery was formulated at a cookout the night before. Italiano and four other men (not including Ierardi) gathered at Walter LaFreniere’s house in Woburn on Monday night to plan the robbery. A career criminal named Myles Connor allegedly tipped Ierardi off about a potential transaction between Solmente and De La Vega. LaFreniere found the location and timing of the transaction directly from De La Vega by asking for his availability.
At 8pm on Tuesday, Italiano, Ierardi, Nicholas Femia, and Gene Giangrande allegedly gathered in East Boston for the robbery. The Blackfriar’s Pub closed at 10pm that night. They entered wearing masks and carrying a handgun and shotgun. The falsified confession alleges that the robbery went south when Kelly recognized Nicholas Femia, and subsequently all five were shot.

While prosecutors might have been able to prove the connections between these people (De La Vega was the shared cocaine dealer for several of the victims and suspects after all), the defense team was able to prove the voice on the confession tape was Cresta’s and not Italiano’s, so the jury was unable to convict the men of murder.
After the acquittal, it appears police still believed the tape’s story, because they went after Femia, one of the four accomplices mentioned on the tape. However, charges were soon dropped. Zachari and Cresta would later be charged and acquitted of perjury in Suffolk County. Another wrinkle in this story is that William Aver’s unrecorded conversation was collected by none other than FBI Special Agent John Connolly (Whitey Bulger’s b*tch). Connolly was 10 years into his career with the FBI at this point. The falsified confession was collected by a state police detective working with the DA’s office, not Connolly, but his participation puts the entire investigation’s credibility into question.
The story in the tape frames the massacre as an intentional strike on people well-liked by the Irish underworld, namely Jack Kelly, by associates of the Italian mafia. It’s possible the real perpetrators were friends of John Connolly (like the Winter Hill Gang) and they were using the Italian mafia as a scapegoat. It would be equally ingenious if the story on the tape was fully true, and the falsified tape was created to make the truth inadmissible. One can only wonder. RIP.
