"Whoever Is Hungry, Come and Eat"? From the Babylonian Poor to the Ashkenazi Elijah - Jewish Review of Books
Whydowebegin the seder by inviting “whoever is hungry” to come and eat? Aren’t the guests already at the table? And why do we do it in Aramaic? It has something to do with Babylonian magic bowls . . .

It’s the first book length study of its kind unflinchingly describing the experience of soldiers in the field, the good, bad, and the very ugly, yet all through the nonjudgmental, curious, and sophisticated viewfinder of anthro.

Tradition and Invention - Jewish Review of Books
If Jews were included in early 20th-century discussions of political communities, it was generally concerning their right to preserve their language and culture, along with other minorities, at a time when empires were being dismantled.

Of course. But that’s precisely the point. From what I understand, the Pieds Noirs were seen as French. European Jews were not seen as actually “belonging” to the European nations that supposedly “sent” them.

Shai Secunda @ssecunda.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
Even if Jewish settlers were seen as playing a role and furthering French interests, there wouldn’t then be returned to France seventy five years later not only because the French don’t want them, but because in a profound way, these Jews were never seen as fully French

Shai Secunda @ssecunda.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
I’m not referring to the fact of them being European! I’m referring to the implication they were sent from, say the French metropol as, say, French(-Jewish) settlers. That’s simply Not how these European countries thought about these Jewish settlers in Palestine.

Shai Secunda @ssecunda.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
I respect the difficult position he’s staked out for himself. But I’m still annoyed by the language of “their settlers” in reference to European countries and Jews who settled in Israel. This settler-colonial framework just doesn’t work, because European countries never saw these Jews as themselves.

You know how in time-travel movies, images of people who no longer exist fade from photographs? Well, the rabbis imagined the ink, which had inscribed your name in the record books, flying off of the papyrus.
