Cool but maybe a bit polite? I'm a fan of this, which catches the madness of the original in a very different way:

Quiet War and sequels are amazing. You’re right though that they’re not direct sequels, more explorations of other places and times in the same universe.

I think this is right, and kind of inspiring, but maybe add that one of the ways of going more philosophical is to put more effort into describing and justifying the information and methods rather than assuming them?

I reacted to John Crowley’s death recently by saying I was going to reread ‘Great Work of Time’. Because I have PDA even with respect to my own plans, I instead reread his early novel Beasts. And my gods, what a novel it is.

John Crowley has died, according to Henry Farrell (www.programmablemutter.com/p/john-crowl...). Farrell’s memorial is lovely. Little, Big is marvellous, but if I have to pick one thing by Crowley, it’s the novella ‘Great Work of Time’.

I seem to remember that there a whole bit of Barry Unsworth’s Sacred Hunger where they put on a Tate version of Shakespeare and go on about how much better than the original it is…

(* the term ‘AI’)
000
Sam Clark @ssamcclark.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
But why couldn’t some possible AI be conscious? What does ‘artificial’ even mean here? Made out of metal instead of meat? Made instead of born? Why would those make a difference? 2/2

Sam Clark @ssamcclark.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
I think part of our problem is that ‘the term AI’ is too loose and general. Actually existing AI Is mostly LLMs, which are very unlikely to be conscious (unless consciousness is much more widespread than we thought). 1/2
