I love how wild all the plants start to look in the garden this time of year!
Chives, pepper plant with flowers, and borage towering in the background.

I’m ready for No Kings Day!
Protest sign with red and blue lettering that states, “Authoritarianism: for men who can’t satisfy voters.” In the bottom right is a crown with the red circle and slash over it and on the bottom left is a sad looking eggplant with an orange combover.

I let a few radishes go to seed specifically for the seed pods. They’re delicious! Like a mild radish crossed with a fresh bean pod. I also have some bok choy next to it that seems to be putting off nearly identical seed pods. I’ve heard all parts of bok choy are edible - but are the seed pods too?🌱

Arguably the most topical and important book right now. If you read one book this month, please make it this one! @janeborden.bsky.social

Left goodreads completely and I’m fully committed to @thestorygraph.com for 2025 and really love it so far. I just need to build some community there now, so please feel free to add me! Don’t be fooled by the highest rated reads - there was plenty of smut too! 😜 app.thestorygraph.com/profile/srnls

Great advice to keep us grounded.
Photo of words reading, Wise and important words from sociologist Jennifer Walter about what is happening in our country right now and what to do about it:

"As a sociologist, I need to tell you:

Your overwhelm is the goal.

1- The flood of 200+ executive orders in Trump's first days exemplifies Naomi Klein's "shock doctrine" - using chaos and crisis to push through radical changes while people are too disoriented to effectively resist. This isn't just politics as usual - it's a strategic exploitation of cognitive limits.

2- Media theorist McLuhan predicted this: When humans face information overload, they become passive and disengaged. The rapid-fire executive orders create a cognitive bottleneck, making it nearly impossible for citizens and media to thoroughly analyze any single policy.

3- Agenda-setting theory explains the strategy: When multiple major policies compete for attention simultaneously, it fragments public discourse. Traditional media can't keep up with the pace, leading to superficial coverage.

The result? Weakened democratic oversight and reduced public engagement.
What now?

1- Set boundaries: Pick 2-3 key issues you deeply care about and focus your attention there. You can't track everything - that's by design. Impact comes from sustained focus, not scattered awareness.

2- Use aggregators & experts: Find trusted analysts who do the heavy lifting of synthesis. Look for those explaining patterns, not just events.

3- Remember: Feeling overwhelmed is the point. When you recognize this, you regain some power. Take breaks. Process. This is a marathon.

4- Practice going slow: Wait 48hrs before reacting to new policies. The urgent clouds the important. Initial reporting often misses context.

5- Build community: Share the cognitive load. Different people track different issues. Network intelligence beats individual overload.

Remember: They want you scattered. Your focus is resistance.

With #tiktok banned, it’s going to be even more important for those of us who are #sober and/or struggle with #mentalhealth to make sure we’re finding moments of self care. I doubt the govt considered the enormity of the simultaneous dopamine deprivation this will cause. I doubt they care. Be well.

My top nonfiction reads so far this year. I’ve become absolutely obsessed with eels. Im told I’m like a 7 yr old boy with dinosaurs, when it comes to eels. What have you read lately that you cannot shut up about and need someone to talk to about?? Any other #eel fanatics out there? 💙📚
Blue book cover titled “The Book of eels” by Patrick Svensson. Cream colored book cover with 70s inspired mod art and a black and white ufo titled “Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism” by Amanda Montell. Pink book cover with vaguely vaginal art titled “Come As You Are” by Emily Nagoski, PhD.

Feeling so lucky this morning that I’m have a community where I feel safe and have ways to use my rage in constructive ways. Do not obey in advance! We have to find ways to fight back, even if it feels small and inconsequential right now. #UU #unitarianuniversalism #socialjustice #antifascism

I used to imagine traveling to France for Beaujolais Nouveau Day, now I have my sobriety instead. But these passive aggressive jabs from unsupportive family are NOT IT. So now I’m enjoying my Sunday morning, hangover free, deciding the level of snark with which I’d like to respond. 🤔 #sobriety
