Worth a read "..Mondo 2000 gave the conjunction its most concentrated visual & editorial form... placed psychedelics, cyberpunk, hackers, music.. digital art & VR inside a single New Edge. And let's not forget that Lord of Light contains the first use of the word "accelerationist." But Zelazny's definition is almost the opposite of today's. Modern accelerationists are closer to the "Deicrats," the novel's villains. (I like to call myself a Zelaznian accelerationist.)

Yes this was a surprise when I learned that. Like many people, I was a fan of Alan Watts in my teenage years, and Watts greatly appreciated Suzuki (I don't think Watts was aware of Suzuki's past).

Yes, I had a lot of fun coding VRML 1 worlds with Notepad (I never really grasped VRML 2, though). Later, there were other attempts to create decentralized worlds, such as Croquet/Cobalt, based on the Squeak language, but they didn’t succeed either.

If I remember correctly , the book "Zen at war" (I don't have my copy anymore) argues that this "amoral" version of Zen is quite recent, post-Meiji. Of course, it was amplified by people like D.T. Suzuki, who was close to Heidegger. I read in your post that Tanabe was too, which I find funny.

“That’s why Deadhead culture is pure American noir. The darkness lurking beneath it—the heroin, the gate-crashing, and worse—isn’t a rebuttal to the utopian ideal. No, it depends on it. You need to believe in the freedom of the road before its captivity feels tragic.”

Why Deadhead Culture Is a Pure Strain of American Noir » PopMatters
Yes, Deadheads came for the music, but also for the possibility of a life outside the bounds of straight society; something vaguely criminal and very American noir.

It seems to me that, as the first generation of "scientific idealists" was largely made up of quantum physicists (cf David Kaiser's book "How the hippies saved physics") the new generation consists mostly of biologists and computer scientists (Kastrup, Faggin, Hoffman, Levin etc).

Could be great to go back even further, before AI, and integrate some tools from the '90s that disappeared and were never replaced. Recently I wanted to create parametric/fractal forms that were easy with P.O.V. 30 years ago, but couldn't find the tools. I had to vibe-code my own versions!

RAW semantics @rawsemantics.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Another (related) difference between 80s/90s RAW/Leary futurism & 2026 Silicon Valley - the latter bets on societal COLLAPSE & need for secure elite zones. Leary & RAW tended to gamble optimistically on societal SUCCESS. Two potentially self-fulfilling prophecies: dystopia & utopia. Not the same.
Timothy Leary quote: "The challenge and glory of cybernetic democracy is this: society can no longer allow one person to feel abused, persecuted, ignored.” (Neuropolitique, 1991 ed. p47"). Illustrated by the comic-book style comparison of a guarded private elite zone with an open, well-functioning futurist society.

Complete Mutagenesis of the Genome and Proteome of ΦX174
The bacteriophage ΦX174 was the first genome to be sequenced and the first to be chemically synthesised. Here we present a complete map of the consequences of changing every nucleotide in the ΦX174 genome and every amino acid in the proteome. In total, half of nucleotide and >60% of amino acid changes impair fitness. However, this varies substantially across proteins and non-coding regions. Surprisingly, the most important mechanistic cause of reduced fitness is disruption of protein interaction interfaces, accounting for nearly half of detrimental protein variants. A further one quarter of damaging variants disrupt protein cores but one in four lack a mechanistic explanation. Mutational effects are only moderately-well predicted by state-of-the-art artificial intelligence models, but, combined with structural modelling, provide mechanistic hypotheses and insights into the DNA replication machinery. This complete mutagenesis of a biological system quantifies the limits of our current understanding of, and ability to predict, molecular biology. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.
