My eye doc says I have bad depth perception, which makes me uniquely qualified to explain this photo. That rebar cage is headed ~200 feet below Portage Bay. Filled with concrete, it’ll become part of the future westbound bridge’s foundation. 🤯 📸More photos from above: flickr.com/photos/wsdot...

In this photo, a crane lowers what's known as a rebar cage inside a 12-foot diameter steel casing. Later, crews will pour concrete into the hole, forming one of the deep underground foundations for the future westbound Portage Bay Bridge. The two foundations shown in the photo each extend about 200 below the bottom of Portage Bay.
