Not that I want data centres up here, but the whole of Scotland is pretty much always a big impressive 0 Carbon Intensity I often ponder how good the UK would have been if England wasn’t so terrified of onshore wind 🤷‍♀️

Nice lunchtime walk today Has anyone else noticed an unusually large number of blaeberries still on the plants? I can’t remember seeing so many still there in early October Last few Bluebells sheltered behind a wall & Cowberry flowers (Lingonberry for those of a Scandinavian persuasion)

Got to love Scotland, we are pretty good at getting both animals (and some notable women) on our bank notes by robustly ignoring the whole king thing Particularly love the otters on the £10 although I don’t use cash much anymore

Here are just a few of the most recent homes CHT helped communities build 20 affordable homes at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig 10 in Achiltibuie 3 on Raasay These are not easy places to build in, communities are the only folk who can access land but building homes & running them is challenging

Argh…,any more governments from other countries want to build renewables in Scotland, its very profitable do come on in… Frankly working with another conscientious state owned energy company is delightful in my line of work But jumping Jehoshaphat can our government just build some generation to?

Today like many times over this summer it’s closed in both directions all day All the traffic has diverted through Aberfeldy which at one point had 9 mile tailbacks on all approaches, HGVs & 8 Ember Buses stuck both ways on the divert. Then gridlock on even single track roads

Gill Steele @squirreltower.eurosky.social · 17/08/2026
We know exactly where the accidents happen because that’s where they always do Summer routine is always check google maps before I go to Dunkekd or South to check because tragically accidents happen so frequently

Single carriageway sections make it particularly dangerous, due to the road junctions we have to use to cross it/get on/off The volume of traffic results in stacks of vehicles waiting 20/30 minutes for a gap to cross or join it, it’s like f**king crossy road but with real people

Like anyone who uses it almost everyday to get to the Doctors, shops, kids to school on the bus, the A9 needs to be duelled (it is being thank goodness) It’s the main route to the north of Scotland, to the islands, Inverness everything uses it - HGVs, busses & tourist traffic (lots of campervans)

Yes it’s so frequent in the summer that I always check if I’m heading south to Dunkeld The community are AMAZING that’s when it kicks in, quickest information system ever via the community Facebook pages This is Aberfeldy in gridlock at the moment

Great to see the progress on the Habitat Management works on a wind farm we built 15 years ago Saw Hen Harrier, Mountain Hare, Scotch Argus and sundew - all of which aren’t as common as they should be in southern Scotland…. & which weren’t there before the wind farm was built in 2011
Mountain hare sitting on a rocky patch Sundew in amongst vegetation

Most wind farms have a limited lifespan 30 years, the turbines get knackered. Repowering of Whitelee is already planned, with bigger more efficient turbines (6MW) Much is on state owned land FLS makes lease from renewables It’s at that stage the government could choose who gets to build it?

This lack of oversight is such a huge loss given the Ha of land that is supposed to be managed under HMP For example huge renewables developers making money but not spending as required by legal agreements on habitat improvement at sites
110 1
Gill Steele @squirreltower.eurosky.social · 07/08/2026
Habitat Management Plans are usually a requirement of the planning consent, sometimes backed by a s75 legal agreement HMP are where a Developer promises improvements in the habitat around or adjacent to their development as part of mitigating the adverse impacts of the development

Biodiversity Net Gain widely used in England, remains undefined as yet in Scotland which is a good thing (thank you Nature Scot for not deciding the metric) Why, because the planning system already does not deliver on existing Habitat Management Plans www.nature.scot/doc/biodiver...

Given the durability and longevity of pumped hydro & the longer construction times, I’m disappointed that Ofgem have only selected three PSH as part of their LDES Cap & Floor Lithium batteries may be quick to construct but they aren’t sustainable in the the long term

Another new wind farm nearing COD, these 200m 5.5MW modern turbines are much quieter than the older models. A few years of construction to get to this stage Thank goodness it’s a cooler 24 degrees in Scotland today

Scotland - your periodic reminder that all electricity is zero carbon today, as it is most days Abundant renewable electricity generation definitely helps us transition to zero carbon heat & transport - looking at the electrification of Scotrail trains in the central belt for example
