@echinoblog.bsky.social I have another sea star question if you dont mind! At my local aquarium our Striped Sun Star has these weird white lumps. We couldn't figure out what they were. Do you know what they could possibly be?

Just got Children of Strife! My other CoT books are paper back and this is hardcover, so I'll have to go get hardcovers for the other ones. Despite the popular opinion I really liked the ending of CoM, and look forward to more of this series! I'll to post my thoughts on CoM in a different thread

Here are some examples of paralarvae with odd morphology that I will be studying in a few months! Figure from Vidal E. A. G. and Shea E. K. (2023) Cephalopod ontogeny and life cycle patterns. Front. Mar. Sci. 10:1162735. doi: 10.3389/fmars.2023.1162735

@echinoblog.bsky.social I have a starfish that I am struggling to identify. Could you please help? It is a super common sea star that is sold all over the place, and the only common name I could find is "White Finger Starfish", or "White Pencil Starfish", but no scientific name I could find.

I'll add a species list later once Ive done it up. I plan on going back out tomorrow night as well, hopefully I'll find some different things. The species listed are what I think they are, but I'm not an expert so I might of misidentified some things.
Sheet of white flesh on beach. About 1 cm thick. Grey with mud covering half of it. Smelt bad only when up close, must of been in the water for a while.Up close image of flesh. Folds are from me moving it with a stick, not naturally there.

Nov 17th 2025: Explored low tide beach at night. Heard bird calls, and occasional splash. Lots of graceful crabs and transparent shrimp at the waters edge. Saw some hermit crabs. Found a blobster! I think it was a Harbor Seal. Blurred photos of it, not that graphic but still gross. Not bloody.
Small transparent shrimp. Eyes stark silver-white, easily reflected my headlamp light.

Nov 10th 2025: Walked along the local boat pier. Lots of gulls and Buffleheads in the water and flying about. Northern Kelp Crab found on piling (photos attached). Lots of Red-eye jellyfish! Saw harbor seals 3 times (either same one or 3 separate ones). Seagulls fought cormorant for a sculpin!
Kelp crab from above the water. Hard to see due to surface reflection.Zoomed out image of the same crab
