Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026A PC in power armor explores a ruined structure. The helmet has night vision systems that improve field of view without alerting others to their presence, unlike a flashlight or lantern. It's expensive, but worth it. Something i hope to do is making getting proper armor feel like a real reward. 061

Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Finished procgen plants. The hardest part was actually choosing the color/tile combinations which seems easily but there's no right answer, you gotta mix and match a palette that looks nice, its like fashion. Here's the results. Lichen, fungi, and a stalk of living metal in a little clearing. 0194
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Quite fond of this small hidden pool. Could be delicious fish in there. Could be a whole entire ghoul. You don't know. If it is the latter though, it would know you're there. 160
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 23/09/2026down into the decayed sectors. Metal superstructure so eroded and corroded it almost looks like natural rock. Domes aren't doming yet but you can see the shape of them in that circle at the bottom. i'll get there. 070

Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Hothouse is a novel where humanity has become small and green 2 thousand million years in the future, earth has ceased orbiting and a gigantic banyan tree covers the world. Plants are animals and bugs are huge. People know like 20 words total. I recommend it. 031

Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Went down a rabbit hole, shared last names will be a thing next update, at least for historical figures. Matrilineal for the Long Night, because its practical. Except for engineered organisms. Then you get your creator's last name. 060
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Still working, just deep in the weeds of bugtesting. Want to get procgen armors out soonish. (linked image is not final for chestplates, just a sample). 061
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 17/08/2026My cat's iconic behavior is that if she wants to be held and I'm busy she wheezes and honks in a really concerning way. I have never seen another animal do this. 172
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 16/08/2026I couldn't capture it in action but something neat happened. As I was wandering, a pair of horrible horse-sized feral posthumans leapt into view. Instead of killing me, they killed something nearer to them, then fled with the corpses, like real predators. Would be a harrowing experience. Near miss. 171
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 15/08/2026example in action. In this shadowy area, covered in ruins, i hear something moving and don't know what it is. I might be able to hunt it, or it might be hunting me. With the limited information available, I have to make a call, and risk exposing myself to something dangerous. 020
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 15/08/2026With my changes to light in the latest update (on DFFD beta for now), you can see how any place lit by the sun is visible, but places overshadowed by hanging structures remain obscured. You can see a beam of light far away, but not the dark between it and you. Could be anything in there. 140
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Flashlights and sensible light physics will be in the next update. If a tile is lit, you can see, it, even if you are in a dark place. Light sources will illuminate areas in front or around you. Posthuman entities have nightvision, but if you play a normal human, these will be important. 150
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 10/08/2026Currently working on procedurally generated descriptions for armor so every civ has a bespoke array of cool power armor. I must admit I am loving taking a break from coding to go back to prose but good lord making the whole flowchart work right with all its style conditionals makes my head hurt. 070
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 09/08/2026Please enjoy this commissioned art by HÆLÏCK/Ocean37. I think it reflects the surreal high technology-horror aesthetic of the Long Night quite well! If you like what you see here, consider checking out the mod, but bear in mind there is a huge difference between the steam release and the DFFD beta. 0156
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 08/08/2026a particle beam can punch through multiple enemies. NPCs will reposition to avoid targeting their allies in the beam's path. The player is under no such restriction. Ignore the particle clusters lodging in wounds and being pulled out, that's a WIP lol. 040
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 06/08/2026firing a beam cannon at some big amoebas. Tragically I missed the shot but you can see the cool animations plus how reloading works. Unlike vanilla, I can move and reload at the same time, though I stayed in place for this one. 1122

Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 30/07/2026Good manga that only updates once every thousand years. Don't let the cool power armor fool you this is actually about insanely thorough geopolitics drama in a Strangereal-type world. Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 28/07/2026I too am tired of tabbing back to my website to remember what all my stupid abbreviations mean. No more (soon). 181
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 27/07/2026A long time ago I toyed with making armor have names like this, but there is no description mechanic for armor, so you had no idea what it meant. But with DFhack, I can append the description directly to the armor item, and with the new Lua, I can procgen it per civ. We armored core/gundam now. 030
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 25/07/2026one of the first Long Night fanart pieces I ever got. Still have it saved. Much has changed but it still looks so good. 1164
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 24/07/2026Even in the megastructures, there are pockets of life. Sufficiently wet environments can foster thick sheets and vine-like trees of moss, fighting for space with the nanite-printed infrastructure. But just because it is natural does not mean it is safe. Many posthumans have adapted to such places. 1334
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 17/07/2026this Miyazaki interview reflects my principles. i often talk about how fucked up and evil i am making my mod but you must understand this comes from a place of regularly throwing myself into the torment nexus 060
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Bleak Faith Forsaken is my hardest recommend yet I will always recommend it. As a soulslike it is janky as hell. As an exploration of some really insane-looking levels it is immaculate. I will always shill Evil Building type games and this is a good one. 010
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 15/07/2026I like listening to orthodox hymn music as background sound while I work and its good stuff but every so often it autoplays to this certain specific video and I tab back to it and the fucking orthochad is staring intently into my soul. i dont need this. why is he here 050

Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 07/07/2026So you know how fire imps in dwarf fortress have an innate "throw fireball" attack? Well if you replace it with a copy of iron and rename it "bullet" it is kind of like it shoots a bullet. But with DFhack I replaced that with a REAL bullet, like an adventurer shoots from a gun. 0291

Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 29/06/2026Recommending this. Follows an extremely nasty pair of guys in fantasy medieval europe. Imagine Between Two Fires but without the warmth or humanity that endears you to that book's protagonists, or Simplicius Simplicissimus but retold by a guy who hates him. Yet I cannot stop reading their antics. 021
Squamous @squamousmodsman.bsky.social · 23/06/2026The Devil's Hole pupfish is a tiny fish that lives in a single cave. It singlehandedly keeps the water table from being drained as that would render them extinct. I just think they're neat. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devils_... 110
