iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

3 is shaping up to be a great time so far, too!! I was slightly worried about going back to nameless self-insert protags just bc i enjoyed 4's cast so much but a lot of the fun you'd usually expect is still there. the world design has been plenty interesting so far aswell

Q. What's your favorite Dragon Quest right now?
A. I've only fully completed 1, 2, and 4 so far... so between those I think it's 4 no contest.

1 was good fun, if a bit simple. I liked it a lot, but didn't feel like I had too much to say. I really like how its progression is just kind of you killing in circles until you pass a grind threshold to make your circles even bigger.
Looooved 2's expanded scope and combat, lots of fun writing and charming moments; but it got a bit too esoteric at times for my liking. Overcoming the Cave to Rhone is one of the more memorable experiences I've had playing an RPG though! When 2 got good it got really good!!
4 was great. The early episodic structure and the way the story converges is soooo cool. The cast are all a lot of fun with great designs and portrayals. I love the design of DQ4 Hero (Male). It had some really cool towns and stories within them. Psaro was a really neat and solidly done tragic villain. I loved the way the narrative unfolded and how it wasn't all as clear as once assumed. There was so much to love out of it, for sure.

020

It's kind of curious that they go SO HARD on Hulkie's food gag, when basically no one else in the entire cast has exaggerated character quirks like that

Q. Who was your favorite character in Metaphor?
A. Tie between Neuras and Eupha, maybe! Eupha is sweetie cutie bingly and I like how she learns to value herself more and connect with others. Neuras is super lovable and charming, his enthusiasm is deeply infectious and you get to learn a lot about him over the course of his link.

All around great cast though, really. I'd say the weakest for me were Strohl and Hulkenberg; they leave some of the strongest first impressions, if only because they're the first people you meet who aren't aggressively racist at you, but they really do pan out to be some of the weaker characters for me by the end, even though I still loved them both; it feels like Strohl is often used to stand in for when you can't speak, which is weird, and Hulkenberg's relationship with her duty feels a bit hard to connect to for me.

She's fairly agreeable, so I guess it would have to be very specific kinds of people who get to her.

Q. We know the BakuNaz dynamic but do you think there's any that go the opposite way? Someone who wants Bakumi's friendship and she's just totally uninterested? (Aya??)
A. At one point I thought about a character like this possibly being Kogasa, but I don't think Bakumi is uninterested, and I ended up thinking it'd be cuter to make them friends. It's still a bit lopsided because Bakumi sort of thinks of herself as above most other youkai who enjoy scaring and startling people. She isn't nearly as consistently up her own ass as Nazrin, but it still seems to be a commonality among Gensokyo's mice youkai that because of their big jobs, they get kind of a pretty big head.

I'm sure Aya really does just want to be friends but her vibes are rancid and Bakumi feels ideologically threatened by her so it never feels like that.

I imagine Orin actually would take a particular interest to her, and in a similar manner as Nazrin, she probably feels a bit put off by her eagerness. I don't think Bakumi is as unnerved by cats as Nazrin, though. She's a bit more "dignified" in that way, and thinks of herself as a mouse second, and the omen of a god firstly.

150

I think she and Hina would like to do Wordle together if it existed for them.

Q. Would Bakumi cheat at wordle
A. She's a pretty stubborn person; she won't let Wordle win by cheating. She's going to spend all day trying to figure it out and then contemplate blowing herself up when it turns out to be something really obvious.

deeply dislike that there is an unexposed map in dungeons and that the game just drops stat seeds and consumables in the overworld, it doesn't take a genius to notice how off that is!! this is also lame! i HATE modern conveniences!! just needed to get that outta the way so i can focus on the good.

Denshattack! Yuhhhp 5/5. Too much good. That first playthrough was TRANSCENDANT. Delicious OST, really fun & charming writing, endlessly exciting setpieces, challenging and engaging gameplay, the vibes were off the charts in every possible way. What a fucking meal. Thank you

• Immediately this game’s sense of style really sticks out. The UI is slick, the graphics are bright and colorful, and the character designs are fun, pleasant and emotive.
• The gameplay feels absolutely perfect. While it seems difficult and even overwhelming at times, everything is ultimately in your control and excellent execution is rewarded with superb feedback on all fronts. The highly reflexive nature of the game makes it feel like an endless test of how well you can dance to its tune, and it’s a damn fun one that had me thinking about playing it long after I had put the controller down.
• The progression and overall stages felt surprisingly well-baked, with far more than I ever expected. If it were just the first two worlds, that alone would have been satisfying, but the game continues to pile on more ideas to create new challenges, and the levels and bosses delve into a myriad of thrilling setpieces and cool gimmicks. It almost feels longer than it needed to be, but at the same time it’s so much fun to engage with and it is so full of ideas that I’m glad it ended up the way it did.
• The writing is a straightforward romp that reminds me a lot of hobby anime and hobbyani-adjacent media like Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh, Bakugan, etc. You’ve got a girl who wants to be the best at the hobby the world is centered around, mentorships, rival characters, and an escalating plot that goes way beyond “kids enjoying the game”. It’s exactly the kind of thing I love, and despite some sort of nutty pacing (which I might argue serves it very well), it’s a very fun time with some very likable characters and satisfying moments. Emi is an impulsive, confident protagonist who works as well as she does because she’s such an effective player surrogate, constantly reflecting your own excitement to engage with the game.
• OST was absolutely absurd. So many great names among the guests, with Lotus Juice, Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, Richard Jacques, and 2mello among others delivering great bangers t…

Or something like that. As usual it changes depending on whether i find it funny/cute or am too lazy to try to measure

Q. How tall is bakumi?
A. Okay I'll try to give actual numbers for her and characters related to her this time since I think people are just tired of me saying "short but not the shortest in the room".

Bakumi: 4'5"
Suwako: 4'0"
Kanako: 6'6"
Mamizou (disguised): 6'2"
Mamizou (true form): 5'6"
Minoriko: 5'9"
Shizuha: 5'10"

jesus christ they dont look real....

I haven't actually thought about her meeting Letty, though.

Q. Seeing as MoF is an Autumn game I wonder: What's Bakumi's favorite season? How does she fare with Gensokyo's humid summers and snowy winters?
A. Rather ironically for someone who is good friends with the Akis, she seems partial towards winter. Her default outfit is informed by the cold of the mountains she positions herself on, but in general she likes to dress heavy, and will take any excuse to do so. Wearing lots of layers is comforting for her; she doesn't love how if it's too hot in the summer and you're already naked, you can't take more clothing off. But it's not like she hates heat, by any means. She's just a bit more of a lil wintery lady. But Autumn is a realy nice season for her too, i would say, and I think if there's any season that I would "associate" with her, however, it's probably Autumn, not Winter.

You have 5 minutes starting now

Q. You should play Evergrace.
A. Why. Normally I look these things up and go "oh, yeah, seems cool!" but not this time! I'm not doing half the work for you! Why should I play Evergrace. Give me the sales pitch.
