the 8th amendment is so deeply inadequate; it has failed to stop so much suffering and death in jails and prisons every single day. at this point it is practically a tool for professionalizing and institutionalizing violence against incarcerated people

It’s sickening to me that we put people through this, including my journalist colleagues who have witnessed multiple executions, who have to try to make sense of what they’ve seen. Grateful to @iamstevenhale.bsky.social and everyone else for bearing witness to this barbarism masquerading as justice.

The tortuous, botched execution of Christa Pike is truly horrifying. And while it feels unique in some ways, in reality it is also only the latest in a history of botched executions going back years — YEARS — in numerous states. Please know: this is the reality of the death penalty in this country.

It's not about plagiarism. It's about the hounding. It's about them wanting to mob up on certain people, and it's predictable who those people will be. If they cared about intellectual theft, we wouldn't be living in the world we are living in. This is about a hierarchy of who deserves to exist.

Some of the richest people in the world want a racial caste system, and they want scholarly backing for that in the form of racist pseudoscience. And a lot of ostensibly non racist people quietly agree, and don’t like to see those who peddle that pseudoscience excluded from mainstream institutions.

I've watched the right use this communication strategy (and close cousins of it) my entire life - and of course, it is much older. quick examples: "solar panels fail at night", "not all men" etc. In each case a true statement is made, yet each is a case of the bad kind of propaganda. 2/

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

Don't let copaganda fool you — police violence is not tied to their safety. In 2025, the vast majority of killings began with police responding to suspected non-violent offenses or cases where no crime was reported.
Screenshot of chart showing how police killings in 2025 began. 680 were suspected non-violent offenses or cases where no crime was reported. 112 were traffic violations. 84 were unknown.

“We need more people highlighting solutions, practicing care, bracing for impacts together, and naming the openings we might push through—which is why the public broadcast of doom and despair deserves scrutiny right now. Pessimism is not foresight, and despair is not a synonym for political clarity. The utterance of "A.I.'s inevitability" is one of the most stark pure performatives I've seen in my time working in higher ed. Every time it is uttered, it is clearly not reporting a fact about the world but instead actively trying to create the reality it narrates. We can and must refuse.
