Columns are often at their best when they combine analysis, reporting and observations with a clear voice. Essentially, columns are reported stories with an opinion. There are other elements, for sure, but not all combine everything as well as this one by @brodymiller.bsky.social #sportswriting

Sure, inserting "Lady" in front of team nicknames is antiquated, sexist and, sometimes, demeaning. But they are also dumb. Right, *Lady* Rams?

To vastly improve sports features, do the following: 1. Use a strong narrative voice w/fewer direct quotes. 2. Interview for information, not for quotes. 3. Ask more folo-up questions (to show, for example, how hard one trains.) 4. Focus on conflicts, challenges faced by protagonist. #sportswriting

Pickleball will become a HS and college sport, replacing or complementing tennis sooner than you think. The game is far more accessible, thus its wild growth – over 220% over the past 4 years. Students can jump right into #pickleball w/o years of lessons, playing OK from Day 1.

Writing recaps of games is as antiquated as using a typewriter, publishing a paper edition, or expecting a pitcher to go nine innings. Instead, tell stories about past games, preferably turning them into features. But don't waste time summarizing past games that nobody will read. Be more creative.

Students in my sports media classes constantly rely on numerals when referencing items to be counted. Thus, they write 4 hits, 3 TDs, 9 first downs, etc., when it should be four, three and nine. Surely, an impact of texting. And certainly worth giving exercises that repeatedly remind them otherwise.

When reporting on a profile story, ask sources to share stories about the protagonist of the piece. Interview for information, not merely for quotes – which, typically, are used sparingly in features. Have a voice. You tell the story based upon what you have learned. 1/

Every story essentially revolves around the central premise: somebody wants something but somebody or something is in the way. Focus on this early, and often, in any sports piece – including game stories. Don't summarize a game or a person's life; instead, tell a story. #sportswriting #storytelling

Focus on the main conflict in profiles (and, really, any story) right away. The shorter the story, the faster to intro the conflict. Since profiles tend to be shorter, that conflict needs to be palpable almost at the beginning of a feature. Here's 1 of my faves. www.texasmonthly.com/articles/she...
