He started last season at 7 to be fair (still being used as the main spinner over Briggs). People forget he's so young, played so few games and missed a lot of what would have been his first full county year with injury - all combined made it hard for War to have done much different to what they did

He batted 5 last season for us, well before he got called up for England, what more do you expect with that top 4! I have never heard a single other person suggest he should have started his career as an opener or batting in the top 4

You think a 17/18 year old playing his first few games of professional cricket, being picked as the main spinner in the side (doing exactly what he'd being used for at youth level) should have opened the batting even though we had 3 experienced openers in the side in Rhodes, Yates and Davies?

David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 22/06/2025
This is the first game he's played for Warwickshire since he made his England debut! He was originally in the side for his spin as much as anything else (he replaced Briggs) in the traditional AR role at 6/7. The same position/role he was used in by the Lions and England youth sides

David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 22/06/2025
He's batting at 5. We have 3 openers (Latham is having to bat 3) and Hain has been excellent at 4 for some time so obviously will stay there. He's batting exactly where he should

Is Danny Briggs still alive? I'm sure this guy would be great but given we don't have a single overseas for the Blast at the moment, maybe spend the money on that instead given we have 3 spinners we can already use in the CC!!

Excellent from Matt and Neil on affordability checks and problem gambling. A must watch for anybody with strong opinions on the subject, especially those on the left.

Yet another empty stadium. It's hard to be in any way positive about the Champions Trophy!

David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 26/02/2025
Yeah England are doing so many basic things wrong - not picking their best players, making little effort to adapt to conditions, picking 1 LH bat and 0 LH bowlers, a questionable culture around the squad and a lack of training... to name just a few!

How many domestic 50 over games do you think the Afghan players have played in the last few years? Same with India, who are comfortably the best ODI side in the world. It's not ideal but we're not the only country where the top players play next to no List A cricket outside of a few ODIs a year
000
David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 26/02/2025
No, but this doesn't fit the agenda of blaming the lack of 50 over cricket played by the English players. Look how few domestic List A games the Afghans have played in their entire careers. Same with India recently, despite being by far the best side. It's far from the main reason we're rubbish

The fringe countries you are talking about expanding it to (Nepal, Hong Kong, USA, Canada, PNG, Oman etc) correctly use what little funds they have in T20 where they can compete. Netherlands, who would be a top 12 side (let alone 16), have won 2 out of 24 ODIs this decade against the top 10 sides
000
David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
I'm all for the expansion of the T20 WC, as I said, since it's played all over the world. Expanding the 50 over WC seems pointless when it's a) dying out according to every metric you look at b) played by a much smaller % of countries than T20 and c) statistically proven to have more 1 sided games
210
David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
With the T20 WC we need as many countries involved as possible. If we're going to persist with this dreary outdated format, the last thing it needs is more 1 sided matches. Only 8 teams involved in this and favourites are all winning comfortably. For ODI I agree with 10-12 team format with 2 groups

Pretty well summed up! All this talk (correctly) of there being too much cricket, this has to be the first thing binned off, no idea why they brought it back

Interesting catching technique from Gareth Delany!

David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 23/02/2025
That's a pretty dreadful PP. The bowling was poor and the batting even worse. Not convinced things will get much more interesting anytime soon given the way Pakistan usually approach overs 10-30

Westwood's appointment seems very much to minimise disruption given how close it is to the start of the season. It's also a continuation of the 'jobs for the boys' setup which I'd hoped the review might have looked at and questioned! Seems to have taken an age and done very little

Well done to Usman Khawaja, pity he seems to be a lone voice among prominent cricketers when it comes to the sacking of Peter Lalor

David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 03/02/2025
Peter Lalor was sacked by SEN halfway through the first Test between Aus and SL for retweeting support for Palestinians and it's barely got a mention. Here's hoping some solidarity is shown by the fellow cricket writers at Cricinfo and @thecricketer.com by covering this cricket.one/who-said-wha...

We're well beyond the embarrassing stage for this England W side and into humiliation. Predictable thrashing for a complacent and thin skinned side but I didn't expect to lose 16-0 and the wheels to come off to this extent. Hopefully brings a much needed reality check and top to bottom changes

Giving rich people paying into their private pensions tax relief at the higher rate costs the government £23.6bn a year. The current Chancellor Rachel Reeves could pay relief at just the basic rate and pay freezing pensioners their fuel allowance eight times over. #toughchoices

Alex Hartley was spot on when she said this originally and I'm glad she's doubled down on it. The fitness of the England womens cricket team is well below what's needed at this level and part of the reason their fielding has been embarrassing for some time now www.espncricinfo.com/story/alex-h...

The most frustrating thing about all of this is if you report these games to the ICC you get no reply, let alone anything come of it! The betting history is easily available to download on BF, all time stamped. Every other major sport takes fixing considerably more seriously than cricket.

Great video from Jarrod breaking down recent match fixing claims in the BPL. I trade numerous competitions a year and there's a reason the BPL is the only one I won't touch. In previous years the betting markets were like a script that would nearly always play out, seems this year is no different

That was the best innings I've seen on debut for some time from Lhuan-dre Pretorius, deserved a 100. Absolutely destroyed a strong bowling attack on a tricky Paarl pitch. He's only 18, got some future ahead of him.

David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 10/01/2025
They won't as that's where the money is. T20 cricket is subsidising red ball cricket, which runs at a huge loss (sadly) due to a lack of interest worldwide. I hate to think how much exactly but imagine it's eye watering numbers. The only sustainable solution is to increase red ball revenue somehow.

7 overs of spin gone for 45/4, 8 overs of seam 106/0. About to start the 16th over, the game is lost and he's still got 5 overs of spin available to bowl. Alex Ross not going to be winning any captaincy awards anytime soon.

What on earth is going on in the Big Bash! No ball tracking but players allowed to review LBWs, where the 3rd umpire has a look and guesses if the ball was going onto hit the stumps. Can't make this up!

David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 19/12/2024
In general I don't mind when a T20 team sacrifices batting depth at 9 & 10 to play their better bowlers but when Riley Meredith and Billy Stanlake are batting in the 8th over of a game it's hard not to laugh

It's one thing making a few poor decisions in a game, it's another level of incompetence when you start making the rules up as you go along!
000
David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 17/12/2024
Utterly ridiculous, makes a mockery of the game. Making the rules up as they go along!
000
David T @sportingtrade.bsky.social · 17/12/2024
The umpiring in this SA v Eng womens Test has been beyond farcical, literally making the rules up as they go along. Hard to see how they can umpire another international game any time soon, you'd think if that happened in a men's game they wouldn't. SA can consider themselves incredibly unlucky.
