I'm not an expert in blue collar work, but I feel like most of the trades people I know are one person businesses or work for very small businesses. So if they're sick, they don't get paid. I'll stick with my laptop job and it's paid sick time and paid vacations.

I've played beer league sports that are co-ed, the "safety" issue is overplayed. Getting hit in the head with a soccer ball is going to hurt no matter who kicks it. Getting hit with a hockey puck is also painful.
