Exactly! You have to cooperate with your past selves and share the objectives. Dying on purpose is a tool to trigger the next loop immediately, or an explosion - when the right upgrade is selected. And maybe additional optional benefits will be added for this option before release ;)

There is a limit, so throwing away lifes might not be the best idea! Unless you choose an upgrade that makes your Echoes explode when dying! ;) Then it could be part of a strategy!

They are limited, dont have AI, they do not react, they can only repeat what you did! There are objectives to complete, not just killing. They need to capture platforms to open the door while you go through it in the next life, distract monsters to allow you to kill them from behind and many more!

They are completely deterministic, they follow everything you did, and die whe you did. Each of the only live until the life they repeat! If in the next life you kill a zombie they(you) killed earlier, they will still shoot at it! This is part of the puzzle! :)
