The contrast with Mujica is so fun, the evil codependent gothic band is a lifeline and millsage is just this

Would have jumped on this far sooner, had I known this is about how a relationship literally founded on love of Mamoru Oshii cannot bloom under capitalism. Targeted personal attack. Profoundly evil film.

#NowSeated rewatch actually, jumped the gun on it because I didn't know when or even if it's getting a proper release here, but now I'm fulfilling my civic duty as a refnhead

It's a pretty cool little movie too, he makes a snack out of the contradictions of idol experience, communal collaboration and cutthroat competition, stifling group dynamics and individualism

Familial fractures and the gaping void, disconnect and arrested development they leave behind. Drawing connection between abandoned countryside and alienation of its characters in slow observational mode, it reminded me of early Kore-eda and Kawase quite a lot. Very cool, very quiet, very green.

Needed a bit of a reset after that, back to Imaizumi Zone. This one was the best kind of "from nowhere to nowhere" movie, a cold but not biting shower of dead end, fundamentally misaligned relationships. Sairi Ito shows up midway through to add another piece to the love triangle; Quruli references 👍

What the blurp omits that said journey involves stealing his late sister's body with his friends and hauling her along in a passerger's seat of a beaten up old car. A worthy addition to venerable genre of "dumb shit happening, everyone is mentally ill and incredibly stylish", I had a blast

A cold, sharp, sad examination of broken vulnerable people slipping, exactly what you come to Hiroki for. A second work recently about grooming, grief, confronting adulthood, individuality, yearning and collaborative creative process, funny how they came from such drastically different places

Veering into later Aoyama and I'm pleasantly surprised, the typical voyeuristic premise gives way to something more slippery, offbeat and novelistic, a studious exploration of stunted relationships, interpersonal distance and emotional unavailability, while retaining lighter sensibility all the same

Ended with The Youth Killer, the other of Hasegawa's two lone features, pretty good dose of provocative exhausting oedipal nihilism that comparatively falters a bit through no real fault of its own by covering a well trod ground while there's not nearly as many movies like The Man Who Stole The Sun

Pretty immersive portrait of a kind of static somnambulist lukewarm unhappiness in a desolate world. Got a bit Aoyamaish, which I really liked. Baby Masaki Suda shows up as a Hawaiian shirt wearing wannabe director neet, playing guys who are just slightly off has clearly always been his forte.
