Below is a statement from the unionized workers of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
SPLC Union Logo:

Yesterday, the Department of Justice leveled outrageous allegations at the Southern Poverty Law Center. In so doing, they maligned the integrity of the SPLC workers who have labored tirelessly for decades to expose the dangerous cruelty of extremists and hate groups in the United States. SPLC Union Logo:

This work is punishing. It takes a toll on our health and on our safety. But we persist because we believe in our mission to advance justice for all, and we believe that investigating, naming, and alerting the American people to the activities of those who seek to harm our neighbors is a moral imperative and an essential public service.Today our colleagues are facing abuse and harassment from the far-right figures emboldened by this attack. But we will not be deterred, we will not be intimidated, and we will continue to name racism, sexism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, and all hate for the blight that it is.

We are living through a moment that demands leadership. This agreement is leadership in action.
It demonstrates the power of trust, solidarity, and shared purpose at the Southern Poverty Law Center.

This agreement is a testament to the power of collective bargaining, providing better protections and well-deserved recognition for the workers who drive the SPLC's impact across the South and beyond.

The workers of the SPLC have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with the SPLC's management after nine months of negotiations.
This is the second contract the
SPLC Union has ratified since its formation in 2019, and it includes multiple new pro-labor provisions that will contribute to the organization's health and resilience during a time when the work of the SPLC's line staff is more crucial than ever.SPLC Union logo

Of the many wins for the 220 unionized workers at the SPLC, this contract includes:
• continued remote work flexibility
• an additional four weeks of parental leave
• significant wage increases, particularly for the lowest-paid employees
• Union-informed vetting and planning process in the event of potential layoffs
• worker protections and responsible limitations related to artificial intelligence in the workplace
• a plan to explore options for improving the ethical footprint of retirement investments

and more! SPLC Union logo

Our first contract dramatically improved
pay and benefits at the SPLC.
This contract takes it a step further by providing additional protections and responding to the threats that our members face today.SPLC Union logo

After mass layoffs in 2024, SPLC's leaders had a lot of work to do in restoring our members' sense of security and dignity.
And they still have a ways to go on that front.
But we're sincere in our belief that the organization and its work truly benefit when staff wellbeing is a priority, and management responded to that sincerity during the bargaining process.

SPLC Union members had the bravery to use their full names in this Guardian story about our recent vote of no confidence in Margaret Huang’s leadership. Meanwhile, SPLC leadership hid behind anonymity to deliver corporate doublespeak. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024...

spokesperson said: "The
SPLC Board was
unanimous in re-affirming its support of the recent reorganization and in its recognition of the leadership of CEO Margaret Huang. We respect the bargaining unit's right to oppose the changes to the SPLC programs and activities, and we empathize with all employees who were impacted by the staff restructure. These decisions are never easy, but necessary to strengthen our strategic framework and focus so that we can meet the challenges of this decade and beyond.

One SPLC staffer wrote, "I can't even survive basic cost of living right now … Your employees deserve better. We deserve to not have to live paycheck by paycheck when we know the center has more than enough funds for it.” SPLC leadership laid them off in June.

Huang made $454,624 annually as of 2023. Other top paid execs make over $200k. Meanwhile, SPLC refused to set a floor of $50k salary for all workers during contract negotiations. Some SPLC staff even have to work second jobs.
